Installation Zorin 18, Nvidia 5090

Hey i have a 5090 and i can not install the linix driver off of the Nvidia Website and the best i could do was the last command prompt that was posted on this site the install would not let me install the modern Nvidia drivers because of an issue so i just went with the base install. Can anyone help me with the command prompt for the latest drivers i have them on my computer but it requested the root install which i went to root then it said it could not find the downloads folder.

I am a little new to this i had Zorin 17 but now im on Zorin 18 and its not working like i intended and i just need some help sorry im not that well familiar with Linix Distros i just have tried to switch over because windows 10 is going out this year and i dont want anything to do with windows 11.

All you need should be:
remove any previous files or attempts first:
sudo apt remove --purge '^nvidia-.*' '^libnvidia-.*'

Once you have cleaned it using the above command to ensure a successful install, run:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install nvidia-driver-590 nvidia-dkms-590

Okay thankyou i did not do the first part and i did change the command to 590 at the end but on the reboot it gave me a 110 error or something like that i noticed on my USB i made for the Zorin 18 install it made 2 partitions and i had selected the first one so now i am trying to do it with the second partition and it came up as FAILED to start ubiquity.service - Ubuntu Live CD Installer.....

I am just going to go back and do the first partition agian and do exactly as you said. I am sorry for the trouble i have just had a hard time getting this volume of Zorin to install and i dont know why the Zorin 17 installed no problem but this one had gave me a headache ever since i got it LOL.

Thankyou for your help im going to get right on it.

It spit out an error 110 then error 7 then more errors then went black i couldn't get a picture of the error quick enough in my room but i am going to try agian and figure something out. I even reinstalled my boot usb with the Zorin 18 ISO file and used DD on the Drive instead of ISO file like on the last one where it had 2 partitions. Im lost at this point and i cant quite crack what the issue is.

I split your posts into a new thread since this seems to have a deeper issue.

Let's take this from the beginning, to get a clear path.

Is Zorin OS 18 installed?

Do you have integrated intel graphics, aside from your Nvidia 5090?

Sorry i was on the old thread i have AMD CPU which i assume has integrated graphics and that does seem to pop up i believe when its going through the set up also my system IDK if this helps and please dont think i am trying to bragg but i have a X870E Nova ASRock MB and a AMD 9950X3D with GSkill Flare X5 64GB CL30 6000Mhz with a Gigabyte 5090 Flashed with a Waterforce BIOS since the PCBs are all the same for Gigabyte cards but i have a dual bios switch if needed and i have 5x M.2 SSDs all samsung but 1 WD Blue and it does not show up unless your in the files thats all its good for its a gen4 ssd in a gen3 slot. Idk if any of this helps you but i have used both ways to make the USB Boot drive and im only able to install zorin 18 when i use safe graphics mode but when i try to update the graphics thats when it takes a dump on me i have pictures of the codes and issues but it wont let me load them in i can send them via email if that helps. But i am stuck.

Plus the RTX 5090, you are on pretty much all bleeding edge hardware.
I am not even certain if Fedora Rolling release is new enough for your machine.

Given the firmware, microcode and needed drivers; I do not think it is worth it to you to try running Zorin OS 18; given you must upgrade to the highest possible kernel and will need cutting edge drivers.

BUT - before we jump the gun, too much...

Did you disable Secure Boot in your BIOS Settings before installing?

Yes i did disable secure boot and fast boot also.

Sorry i just seen your post and i didn't update the page in time. I thought it might be because of the hardware being as Grok AI was saying the same thing. So should i go back to 17 Pro instead of 18 Pro until everything gets updated? I have done everything in my power to get things to run properly and i am no expert or computer guy i am learning as i go. But i can usually figure things out between AI and Youtube and forms but this one has stumped me.

Well now... hold on...

Zorin OS 17 works?!

Ya it was working i still have it on one of my drives i think i did upgrade since then but ya it works. I have repurposed the drives since then but its still listed on the drives as a partition when im selecting the boot drive. I just decided to go to 18 since it came out.

I was running an older driver though if i remember correctly. And i think thats my hang up here i can run the base softwear and load into some games but when i try to go too the 590 driver thats when it tanks.

Also i can not as i already mentioned install with modern drivers at the menu but it will let me log in on the normal and or safe install then i update the softwear and it will run no problem.

Would i be fine running an older Driver on my graphics card you think?

Or should i just figure out what will work and run with it?

In the beginning i got Zorin 17 Pro and had a 4080 Super and a 7800X3D which at the time was new and almost top of the line other than the 4080 Super but everything worked fine then i went too the 9950X3D and from what i remembered no hick ups.

Then i swapped motherboards from the B650 too the X670E and still good.

Then my graphics card took a dump so i upgraded too the 5090 and as far as i can remember Zorin 17 was up and running i haven't used it in a while but ya pretty much everything was fine.

Now when i went to Zorin 18 for whatever reason i have had troubles downloading the ISO file to trying to install it to making a boot drive pretty much everything imaginable has went wrong and im not sure if it goes back to my downloaded ISO file which only would go 5mbps or around that very terribly slow like hairpulling head banging against the wall walk away for the day and come back to a time out on my downloading in my browser because it was going to slow and having to baby set it so it wouldn't log out of the download slow LOL.

Im all ears to help im sorry for all the trouble and back and forth i dont mean to cause any issues and i appreciate everything your doing to help me and i understand sometimes its not all cut and dry.

Have you tested the 580 driver on either 17 or 18?

I cant remember i had it updated but i dint remember i can try or check. I just had it do its thing eith the drivers on there. But 18 doesn't have the little page or option like that.

Let's stick with
sudo apt remove --purge '^nvidia-.*' '^libnvidia-.*'

Then run:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install nvidia-driver-580 nvidia-dkms-580

Okay i am reinstalling Zorin then i will try that i am sorry for my lack of information on the Zorin 17 Drivers i had its been a few months back and i can not remember stuff at times i remember the little screen where it would let you pick from 3 drivers or something like that but after i picked it the first time and set it up i really didn't fool with it too much unless i was having issues with games and stuff of that nature. I do apologize for that.

I just finished setting up the install on the safe drivers option its got to restart i will see how this goes.

Also for what its worth idk why but it seems to do a cleaner and easier install when i use the ISO option instead of the DD option when setting up and formatting the USB Drive and i just use partition 1 instead of partition 2 then it goes right on through.

When i used the DD option and it made it one big USB File when i installed Zorin the mouse was jumpy and laggy not smooth and the screen would visibly resize after i went past the log in screen and would be black with a smaller screen then jump to different sizes until it filled the screen properly. Dont know why that is but maybe that helps.

No problem - but why not try the 580 on Zorin OS 18 first?

I never thought of that to begin with tbh. Also now i just get a GRUB screen and i can not get past the install process after i select everything and go through with the time zone with the drive formatting and everything. Guess its back to square one agian.:roll_eyes:

Maybe I misunderstood. I had thought Zorin OS 18 was installed...

Well.
If 17 installs without issue and runs without issue - it is still supported. Truth told, I personally prefer 17 over 18, in any case.
If you do not mind taking that route, it looks like a win, to me.

Once you have it up - you can install the 580 driver to test it - be sure to run upgrades and I would recommend getting the highest kernel possible...

Okay im back in Zorin 18 im going to try the 580 Driver sorry for the confusion

Yes Zorin 18 was installed but when i tried to update to 590 it bricked the whole drive so i had to go back and do a whole clean install and reformat the drive sorry
