Hello,
I am an ordinary user, I installed Zorin OS 17.3, next to WIN10 on an older PC with a Gigabyte Z87-HD3 motherboard, 24GB RAM, Intel Core i5-4570S 2.9GHz, integrated graphics Mesa Intel HD Graphics 4600 (HSW GT2).
After installation, the system "booted" normally, then I confirmed the application and OS updates and after restarting I end up in a gray-blue screen. I have been "googling and laboring" for about two days and I found out that there must be a problem with the graphics. I tried installing the Intel XORG drivers, MESA-utils, creating a 20-intel.conf file, various parameter settings for i915. I only managed to make partial progress, the system boots only if I manually edit GRUB and after ...splash I add i915.modeset=1 nomodeset vt.handoff=7. Unfortunately, it boots without acceleration support. I have also tried older kernels 5.15.0-92, 5.15.0-152, 6.5.0-41, with them I end up with a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left. I have also tried the glxinfo command, it does not exist in my OS, I have tried inxi-G, there you can see that the driver is loaded, but the renderer item is not there.
I thought of trying to run Zorin OS from the installation USB, strangely enough it starts normally, and through glxinfo I see that it loads the graphics with acceleration support. It seems that after those updates, something is loaded right after the installation that can no longer work properly with the old graphics. Please advise how to force the installed Zorin to see the acceleration as well.
When you see the grub menu at boot select advanced options for Zorin and there choose the oldest 6.8 kernel (as this kernel has worked). Then set this kernel as default at boot:
Thanks for the response. I'm running kernel 6.8.0-65 and the older one is 6.8.0-60. I tried running 6.8.0-60, manually edited GRUB via "Edit" at boot, I left only a clean "quiet splash" there and the result is the same, the system boots, "Z" is displayed and then it ends in a gray-blue screen. As I wrote above, I also tried older kernels 5.15.0-92, 5.15.0-152, also 6.5.0-41, the same result every time.
Welcome to the Forum!
Because Zorin Core runs in Wayland by default, You have to switch to Xorg. To do that, go to the Login Screen (not the Lock Screen). Simply reboot for that. On the Login Screen, click on Your Profile so that the Password Field appears. When it is appeared, You should see a Gear Icon in the bottom right Corner. Click on it and choose the Option ''Zorin Desktop on Xorg'' and then log in.
I installed the XORG driver with the command sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-intel, so I think we're talking about the same thing. When I click on my profile on the login screen and the Password field appears, I don't have the GEAR icon in the bottom right. I can only get to the login screen with the nomodeset parameter, see above.
Yes, that might be the Driver. But the System have to run in X11/Xorg, too.
Okay, then let's try this: Go to Settings>About and look if there stands Wayland or X11.
Are secure boot and fast boot in your BIOS disabled and fast startup in Windows?
I have X11 there.
Yes, I'm sure.
You have to login to you account first, and log out. Then you should be able to see the gear icon:
Can you double check? It would be strange that your system already is running on Xorg without you making any changes, as that is not the default. That could be a sign of something else that's causing this.
I logged in and logged out, the result is in the photo. However, the acceleration is already working for me, uninstalling Mesa-intel, cleaning and reinstalling helped me. In GRUB, I left the parameters i915.modeset.1 nomodeset vt_handoff=7 for quiet splash. The system boots up and the acceleration is working, checked via glxinfo -B and glxgears -info. Thank you all for your efforts to help.
Well, I can't say I know what's going on, but I'm a big fan of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"
