When i try to install zorin on my computer the installer keeps crashing when it gets to installing files. I tried it in virtual box and it worked fine. I put zoring on a usb with ventoy. I am trying to install it has dual boot with windows 10
Try redoing the iso on a differnt thumb drive and see it this presists I had this problem once and redoing on another usb drive solved the problem
Hi,
because the installer works in VirtualBox, the ISO itself may be OK. The problem is probably related to the USB boot method, the real hardware, or the dual-boot disk setup.
The first thing I would try is to avoid Ventoy for this test. Ventoy is very useful, but sometimes Ubuntu/Zorin-based installers can behave differently from a normal flashed USB.
Please try this:
- Create a new Zorin OS USB stick using balenaEtcher instead of Ventoy.
- Boot from the USB again.
- Choose âTry or Install Zorin OSâ or, if available, try the safe graphics option.
- In Windows 10, disable Fast Startup before installing:
Control Panel â Power Options â Choose what the power buttons do â Change settings that are currently unavailable â untick âTurn on fast startupâ. - Also make sure Windows was fully shut down, not hibernated.
- If installing as dual boot, create free unallocated space from Windows Disk Management first, then let the Zorin installer use that free space.
If it still crashes during âinstalling filesâ, please post:
- your computer model
- CPU
- graphics card
- SSD or HDD
- how much RAM
- whether Secure Boot is enabled
- whether the crash always happens at the same percentage
That information will make it much easier to find the cause.
Best regards,
Daniel
Arrgh, not Balena Etcher. That tool, although promoted by the devs, gets a lot of bad marks here on the forum. Instead of Ventoy, maybe Rufus should be considered as often recommended tool.
More pre-installation advice can be found here: Before you install
Always check the SHA256 checksum of the downloaded .iso file Before trying to create a installation USB.
Welcome to the Forum!
Some Questions:
- Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled?
- Is Fast Start-Up in Windows disabled?
- Does Your BIOS is in UEFI or Legacy Mode?
- How is Ventoy set up? Does it use the MBR or GPT Sheme?
- Did You checked the Checksum of the ISO?
I had this issue on my pc, unplug ethernet cable and did worker for me and download updates later. My laptop did not had this issue. Built in check also gave no errors.
Pc still says after search for update something went wrong but does shows and download updates anyway so Iâm not complaining. Used same usb installer on my laptop so I think itâs my pc for some reason.
So try with out internet and plug internet in after installation.
thats what i did. I created fee unallocated space from windows disk management. I think its down to ventoy once had a similar problem with kali linux i used rufus to flash the iso and it kept failing at an installation step and there forums told me to use ventoy. I will try again to night
i cracked it got it installed at last just the graphics to sort out now. i have a nvidia geforce rtx 5060 and its not installed properly because my sound does not work has i have it on hdmi and the sound comes through the tv
What for a Driver do You use?
i dont know i think its a generic nouveau driver that linux install but it wont work my sound properly when i look in sound settings it says digital something or other and there is no option for hdmi
open the software updater then when its done open the settings and look in additional drivers there should be drivers for you there 580 or 590 ones that say at end propriatary
Thanks im in windows at the moment i'll try that later
Well, then I would suggest to install the Nvidia Driver. It should offer a better Performance. You can do that at the ''Additional Drivers'' Tab in Software & Updates or in the Terminal with the Command:
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-590 nvidia-driver-dkms-590
That will install the 590 Driver.
Another Thing because You have a Nvidia Card: You should check if Your System runs in Wayland or X11 with the Command echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE and when it runs in Wayland, it should be worth a Try to switch to X11/Xorg and see if it runs better.
To switch, go to the Login Screen, click on Your Profile so that the Password Field appears. When it is appeared, You should see a Gear Icon in the bottom right Corner. Click on it and choose the Option ''Zorin Desktop on Xorg'' and then log in.
I tried that and still no joy. No option for HDMI.Also tried the xorg desktop no joy
Could You make some Screenshots from Pulse Audio so we can see here what Options do You have? Also: Did You checked the Cable?
I have one option digital output (S/pdif) - familly 17h model no HDMI the cable works fine in windows i have tried 2 other linux distros and same thing thats why i came to zorin os i thought maybe that one will work

FWIW using Rufus for my installer (AFTER verifying the checksum) ended with the install crashing; shifting to Belena (had to reinstall it after not using for a WHILE) actually let it run and finish with no issues. Haven't tried Ventoy, tho.
Anecdotally, and related only to my experience - it seems there may be a reason the devs recommend it ÂŻ\ _ (ă)_/ÂŻ
Dont use ventoy it wont work with zorin
Hi,
thank you for posting the lspci output.
From this list I can see an AMD system with an AMD 400 Series chipset, SATA in AHCI mode, Realtek Ethernet, and an NVIDIA graphics card showing as âNVIDIA Corporation Device 2d05â.
At this point I would not blame the USB stick first, especially if you already tried different tools such as Ventoy, Rufus, and the Windows USB method.
The next thing to narrow down is where exactly the installer crashes.
Could you please tell us:
Does the live USB desktop start normally before installation?
Does the crash happen before partitioning, during partitioning, or only when it says âinstalling filesâ?
Does it always crash at the same percentage or same step?
Did you try the safe graphics option when booting the Zorin USB?
Is Secure Boot enabled or disabled in BIOS/UEFI?
Is Windows Fast Startup disabled?
Are you installing in UEFI mode or Legacy/CSM mode?
Are you using automatic âInstall alongside Windowsâ or manual partitioning?
Is the target drive SSD or HDD?
Do you have more than one internal drive connected?
Also, if you can boot into the live Zorin session, it would help to post the output of:
inxi -Fxxxz
lsblk -f
sudo parted -l
Since you have an NVIDIA card, I would definitely try booting the installer in safe graphics mode first. If the installation succeeds that way, the NVIDIA driver can be installed properly after the first boot.
Best regards,
Daniel
