Issues with UI and Zorin Appearance

Hello there,

Came to this forum to let you know I have had this issue twice in different machines. (virtual and physical)

A couple of days after installed (the actual machine the same day after installed it) and the Zorin appearance themes are no longer working. All you get is the standard gnome UI. I've tried everything here with no luck...

You are able to open "Zorin Appearance" app but none of the default desktops work regardless what you chose.

Did anyone able to resolve this? Zorin is nice ...it just seems not reliable in the long run.

Welcome to the Forum!

I created a seperate Thread for this so we have a better Overview and can take a better Look on Your specific Issue.

Before the Problem happens:

Did You get any Updates?
Did You anything to customize Your System?
Did You changed any Settings?
Did You installed something?
Or was it simply happen from one Moment ot another?

Did You tried it with a reinstall of Zorin Appearance? To do that, type in the Terminal:

sudo apt reinstall zorin-appearance zorin-appearance-layouts-shell-core zorin-appearance-layouts-support

Another Option would be to try to reinstall the Zorin Desktop itself. You can do that with the Command:

sudo apt reinstall zorin-os-desktop

No recent updates, just all updates after a fresh install using the entire disk (no dual boot or manual partitions)
No customizations. Just picked the third desktop available in the Core (bottom left desktop). Zorin Appearance application.
No custom settings at all. Nothing additional apps installed. Just Core environment a few reboots later after applying all post-installation updates.
Happened from one moment to another. The first time it happened last year I did installed it on a spare laptop... worked fine for almost two weeks and got back to default gnome UI. Now I have it as a virtual box machine in a desktop with AMD processor and AMD graphics card. (I can share my screen if you want to check that out cause it's really weird)

After installed the first command, only the last package is missing: zorin-appearnace-layouts-shell-support

I think the last package is incorrect, it should be zorin-appearance-layouts-support.

After reinstalling those (make sure to also run sudo apt update first), you can try to go into Zorin Appearance -> Theme -> Other, and click on "Reset to defaults".

Indeed there was an error in the first command, but nothing's changed.
Same issue.
I also rebooted and retried everything and it went fine without errors. No impact in the UI though (even after resetting back to defaults in Appearance app).

Okay, to ask that clear. Which Layout You choosed in Zorin Appearance. 1 or 2:

And we should control the Extensions, too. Go to Gnome Software (the blue Bag Symbol with the white Circle) and there search for the Extension Manager:

It is a tool for managing Gnome Extensions. Install it and open it and on the ''Installed'' Tab look for Zorin Taskbar and Zorin Menu and turn the Toggle on.

I was thinking about the same thing, as I've run across times where the extensions got turned off, which caused me to lose my Zorin appearance in the past.

Make sure User Themes is enabled...

Yes I know I have Zorin Dash turned off on mine, I am using an alternative, but you should have everything "Zorin" turned on in there.

I installed extensions and discovered that many Zorin options were disabled; however, they cannot be enabled as they all appear grayed out, like in "read-only" mode.

Any idea why?

No problem! I'm glad that the command is working fine.

I was using number 1 and also don't have a single problem with the default theme.

I guess you could try to run sudo dpkg-reconfigure zorin-os-desktop as well in case it failed to setup properly for some reason.

If none of this works, it may be worth looking through the log files. First, you can try:

journalctl -f

This will leave the process running in the terminal and show any log output as it happens in real time. Then, launch Zorin Appearance again and try to switch the theme, layouts, etc.

Here's the capture I started just before opening Zorin Appearance, then tried to set one of Layouts, and the rest of the output when I hit Themes > Other > Reset to Defaults.

I was just thinking, you said that this happened on several installations... did you check the integrity of the ISO file to make sure there's nothing wrong with it?

Hmm ... the Extensions are there ...

Does Your System run in wayland Mode or Xorg? You can check that in Settings>About. Look if there stands Wayland or X11. If there should stand Wayland, try it with switching to X11/Xorg.

To do that, go to the Login Screen (not the Lock Screen). Simply reboot for that. On the Login Screen click on Your Profile so that te Password Field appears. It has to be appeared. When it is appeared, You should see in the bottom right Corner a Gear Icon. Click on it and choose the Option ''Zorin desktop on Xorg'' and then log in and try if it works.

First time I tried Zorin was about a year ago in a physical PC. Happened about a week later.

This year I gave it another try in Virtual Box and it is doing exactly the same (after I got the latest Zorin image which is one version newer than the last one).
