Looking for a replacement for my 10.1" laptop

Ok, I've been using an old Samsung N150 10.1" laptop, (LinuxLite installed) for years now.

Can't complain : cost me 45 bucks on fleabay, form factor's just perfect when you want to travel ligt. No need for something powerful : word processing and web browsing mainly.

But now, my needs are changing. Need something more powerful to install the latest Zorin on it, but the form factor needs to stay the same.

So far, found only that : https://www.chuwi.com/search?keyword=minibook

Was wondering if any of you has one and comment on it (while using Zorin or any other distro) or can advise any other laptop withing this form factor ?

Thanks.

Is that suppose to be helpful ?

I would suspect the usual teething areas most common on Mini's:

  • Sound: sof-firmware
  • Wifi - whether the included card has full Linux support
  • USB-C ports (Should be just fine but some people have noted limited support)

So far, my experience with minis is limited to my Samsung N150 and my HP/Compaq 110 (with conked out after 2 months only, motherboard fried at startup), but never had any of the problems quoted above, nor any other btw. Had far worse experiences with "regular" laptops, especially ones fitted with a broadcom wifi.

This is also true. My post was intended more as a steering wheel and less as drivetrain.

You probably would have no issues running Zorin OS on the machine.
But that is not guaranteed - so I listed the probable trouble areas for deeper inspection.

A 10" screen will limit options for a notebook computer. The average notebook computer that most people buy, are between a 13" to 15" screen.

I did find a notebook with a 12" screen, from the reputable Framework company. They are a bit costly, but are fully modular machines, and you could put Zorin OS on them.

You could also get a Star Lite from Star Labs, which is practically a glorified 12" tablet, with keyboard. You can get their machines with Zorin OS already installed on them, or install your own.

I'd recommend either brand, they have good reputations.

Know both brands, but way too expensive for my needs. And 12" is too big. Sorry, I'm a tough customer

As far as form factor is concerned, many Chromebooks would fit the requirement. Has any of you any experience with them ?

The info I've found about Linux on Chromebooks is rather puzzling. It seems that on older models, you need to root and install a new firmware, on more recent ones, it seems the solution is either Linux on a VM or installing it directly, but it's not really clear...

I thought you may have suggested a HP stream 11 as featured here: Responsive Zorin 18 on old Celeron laptop w/ 2GB RAM
I guess you could find one of those in a charity shop or dumpster/(skip). It does somewhat corroborate my story, that Zorin Core can run fine on a HDD and RAM limited dual-core antique, if you prune it regularly.

Unfortunately the OP does say they want something more powerful and screen is half inch too big to qualify

Well, over the year, I've used several computers save from the scrap heap, so why not ? Right now, I'm considering several options. When I say powerful, I mean with more than 2go of ram, the damned limitation imposed by the Atom CPU. 4go would be enough.

Also be wary of eMMc drives and soldered in RAM chips, which may be prevalent in small screen laptops.

The other issues relate to the processors. Minis tend to have 64-bit architecture but they made the processor only support 32-bit Operating Systems.

I avoid eMMc, the reason why I'm using a Samsung N150, fitted with a SSD.

As I've said : tried a HP/Compaq 110 and the Samsung N150, both supported 64 bit OS.

?

Thanks, wasn't aware of that one. Not much bigger than my netbook, but clearly more powerful. Just one drawback, not available... Maybe 2nd hand on fleabay ? Who knows ?

I noticed it had some bad reviews. Knoe nothing about this one:

Thanks, but not sold in France... again... Still it brings water to the mill.

I used fake geolocation and hid IP address to search amazon.fr. Had to smile at the incorrect word for screen size. You wouldn't get it through the front door!

Funny indeed, but 14 inches, that's already too big for me.
