Microphone Error using Chat Client's

Hi!

I'm new to ZorinOS but not new to linux.
As I'm not too happy with several Ubuntu decisions I decided to give Zorin a try when I bought a new refurbished notebook (Lenovo X380 Yoga). And in sum I'm quite happy with it yet.

But as title announced: Euphoria is slowing down a litte.

I like to communicate with the matrix protocol using the standard client Element, preferably its flavored variant Schildi.chat. These are available as web client (e.g. at https://schildi.chat or http://element.io) and also as (iirc electron-based) desktop clients which you can install both from official repos and from community maintained flatpaks.

Good news: The clients work in all those variants almost completely perfect with Zorin.
Bad news: If you try to start a Call (Audio or Video) in a direct chat there's a serious sound issue. I.e. the moment you try to call s.o. or try to take a call you'll receive an error message that the app can't access the device's microphone.
Which is odd because
a) the devices are shown correctly in the apps settings
b) the mic works e.g. in my Nextcloud-Talk Calls in Firefox
c) I can even record Voice Messages inside the clients. So the microphone definitely works. Even in the app!

I observed in pavucontrol that the app's Streams are identified as Chromium and seem to pertain even if the call fails and if the app's closed - which they shouldn't.

It also seems that once after Login in all those apps you can successfully call someone. But after that it won't be possible again.

I use those clients on several devices (iMac, several desktops with ubuntu both 20.04. and 22.04, several laptops also with ubuntu and on android) and never experienced those troubles before.

I can't of course exclude that it is in some way hardware related as this device is new and I didn't try any os on it before. And I don't have Zorin on any other device yet to test.

But I thought, I just ask here and hope s.o. has experienced the same - or likes to test it yourself?

Thanks for hints or results in advance!

EDIT: Note solution thread here:

I restarted pulseaudio in debug-mode (pulseaudio -vv) and when I tried to start a call received that:

Maybe someone with more understanding of pulseaudio can find sth useful in those outputs

Gday @homer77 , Welcome to the community!

Try running this then reboot & test.

sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Can you also tell us the spec's of that Notebook
Eg:
CPU size Ghz:
RAM capacity:
HDD size:

keep us informed

Hi @Ocka
Thanks for the warm welcome!

Anything else I can inform about?

Gday @homer77 ,

As it's a refurbished unit , first make sure the BIOS firmware/drivers are upto date.
Then run an update for the pc via Software centre or via the terminal ( In software centre open " Additional Drivers" & check if there is a driver/s make sure you select the appropriate drivers to suit)

Can you please show the output of these.

pacmd list-sink-inputs

Also can you tell us, is this a power microphone/ usb/etc or do you have an external media device/mixer/etc ?

I'll check the bios as soon as I find some time, hopefully at the weekend.

It is the built in onboard microphone of the convertible laptop.
But to check I have recently tested it with a Terratec Aureon Dual USB-Stick i.e. an external USB sound device. Which led to the same result unfortunately. So, other soundchip but still the message that the app can't make use of the microphone.

Oh and there are no additional drivers in the software center.

I keep you updated about the BIOS.

You have a high latency reading, this can also be Hardware drivers/etc so updating may help.

If it continues, Try Disabling the browser "Hardware Acceleration" Enable-Disable FF Hardware Acceleration

Also clear browser cookie & cache, & refresh your modem & router .

Some updates:

  1. The BIOS is v1.35 from last year. There is a v1.37 from march and I downloaded the ISO (~26MB) from lenovo.com. I wrote it on an usb-stick and restarted device. When I booted it nothing happened. If I open the device in filemanager ... it's empty. I am not an expert for BIOS updates but I would have expected the filemanager to show anything  So it seems like I can't update BIOS at the moment. Its changelog mentioned only a handfull of fixed cve ...

  2. When I wanted to try to disable the HW acceleration I found out sth else:
Independent of the acceleration I found that after a reboot the web client worked in FF. I.e. i could call successfully. :tada:

BUT: When I started one of the desktop clients I received the Failure Message again and couldn't call.

Even better: After that I received the same message again in the web client. Even a restart of the pulseaudio server didn't fix this. (That corresponded with my observation that the Chromium sink wasn't ended in the pavucontrol Recording tab.)

So it seems that the device works well as long as I don't start one of the desktop clients. They seem to break the sound setup sustainably
I think that the desktop clients actually just use chromium to box the web client. Maybe that's relevant to understand why the webclient in FF doesn't break the sound setup in contrast to the desktop clients.

I'm quite curious if that happens on other devices with zorinOS, too ...

Good to hear,
Please search on the "Updating BIOS", Please backup your system or files, prior to updating the BIOS, Here's for BIOS help

As for the desktop client's, the BIOS update may help, also check for updates "AFTER BIOS UPDATE"
You may also check if your machine has hardware acceleration in BIOS , Disable if able.

Keep us informed

Again sth new:

I tested the flatpak Element client on another device with BhodiLinux 6.0 (Also ubuntu 20.04 based). Same problem! So it's not device specific and might have to do with flatpak or better the chromium base of the clients.

While under ZorinOS the clients from the official deb-repos show the same problem the schildichat-client from the repo asks me for rights like chromium as a browser does. And after approving - the video chat works.

So that supports my assumption that the clients need approval for microphone and cam. And while I can give them for the web client in firefox I am not even asked in the desktop clients. Unfortunately I don't see any way to give those rights in the desktop clients. I have installed flatseal but PulseAudio is already approved there.

I searched again after such reports and found Couldn't start capturing media! Is your microphone set up and does this app have permission? · Issue #837 · vector-im/element-desktop · GitHub ... They start in 2019 and the last is from 2021. So it's a reoccuring problem it seems.
As it's not Zorin-specific I would close this thread and update it, if I'll ever find a solution.

Thank you very much for your efforts @Ocka !

When you install a desktop client it will automatically select/set to your machine defaulted devices, ( mic, cam, speaker, hardware) so by means of when your normally see "Accept" you are granting permission, this is part of machine security.
Where as using a client via a browser, as you know it will ask for permissions, this is part of the browsers security.
You will need to disable all browser HW accel that you use.

Yes this is not the OS, as you now know, So the issue can be HW accel in graphic/audio/bios.
Also a connection issue, drivers/firmware/modem/router.

Why you get an error is, there is a spike/lack of data, caused by latency or overdrive , (Try setting your mic DB Gain to zero, may help, as an on the moment thought).
Latency can be caused by both HW & connection.
Overdrive, HW/settings ..

As for the Topic title, i'll change it to "Microphone Error using Chat Client's"..

Keep us informed bit by bit we should work it out,

Also good work try/testing on other machines, this helps us both, keep up the good work :+1:

ADDED: On the desktop client, you may also find in "setting/sound" thing's like " noise suppression"/other options, try different configurations.
Or in microphone may have a selection of your in-built mic or system default, etc/etc, try changing these if available,
Even in speaker setting.
hope this may help.

Now I created a LiveUSB with Ubuntu22.04LTS and started it on my X380Yoga machine, installed element-desktop with snap. --> Same Problem!

Snap package; Element Desktop.

Snap packages are double sandboxed, preventing them from being able to communicate with necessary files on the system.

Following that Clients that may have been installed using Snap or Flatpak and therefore double sandboxed as stated by @Aravisian , have you found and tested with any Clients installed using apt source? Just asking.

Yes. I have installed both element-desktop and schildichat-desktop from their official repositories via apt. And found the same problem as with flatpak and snap.

That is why I hypothesized that it might be linked to the chromium component of electron which is afaik used to build the clients.

I think that also corresponds to my report that the repository-installed client on my Bodhi-Linux netbook asked me for device access approval. After approving I could successfully call (like the webclient in FF). I don't know why that client was able to ask me while none of the other clients did ...

Maybe I should check another DE (as Bodhi was yet the only environment I tested without GNOME ...).

I tested it with LiveUSB Ubuntu22.04, installed budgie-desktop and changed into it, installed the snap container of Element aaaaaand ... Same problem. So - DE agnostic problem :person_shrugging:

For the moment I stick with the web client as FF is open most of the time anyways

And FF asks me for Cam and Mic privileges everytime I start a call first time after FF was relaunched. I still assume that that's the cause of the problem. The chromium in the electron based clients should ask for privileges and just doesn't. Android and MacOS clients work as they should in the current version by the way.

I yet noticed a corresponding issue at the github repo of element and linked to this thread (It is currently not possible to start a voice call · Issue #16395 · vector-im/element-web · GitHub). Won't hurt if the project checks if that's a platform specific app related bug.

Another thought, disable your firewall, just to test the Mic.
For testing the desktop app.
