Nautilus frequently hangs

Nautilus is frequently hanging, generating a "Nautilus is not responding" error message.

Here is my system... OS: Zorin 18 Core, Kernel: 6.17.0-19-generic, Computer: Dell 3650, Processor: i5-6400x4 (x86), Memory: 12GB

The error occurs when I try to open any folder, including Home, from the desktop, the Zorin menu (lower left corner), or from a link in the task bar. It most frequently happens if I am running another app such as a browser. It has occasionally happened right after waking the computer up from sleep mode.

As a temporary fix, I have resorted to running a Bash script from a keyboard shortcut to restart Nautilus if it is unresponsive, and to open the Home folder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. FYI, I have done extensive testing of my SSD and memory, and have found no issues. Thanks.

try to remove folder-color, maybe it will help:

sudo apt remove folder-color

What does folder-color do?

if you right click on a folder you can change the color, with the color option, it cause some problems with nautilus, try to remove it, its just an extension, you will loose nothing

It was because You had these Lines and up and down them now free Space. And the # was a Point, too. I have changed that. I hope it looks fine for You now. If not, feel free to change it again.

I tried "sudo apt remove folder-color" an hour ago, and so far it seems to be
working. I haven't seen Nautilus hang. I'll keep testing for a day or two, then come
back to check the "Solution" box if it's still working.

If it is a common problem, is it being addressed by Zorin?

In my case Thunar has solved the problem. Using that for my file manager I mean. There are parts of the system that necessarily still rely on Nautilus, but their nature is such that it has never crashed since making Thunar the default file manager. And it has more functionality (including split screen), etc. - which Nautilus used to have but does no longer...don't know why.

it is but it's not a Zorin problem in peculiar, it's the extension, Zorin is under ubuntu LTS, so they follow some repos, I think they removed this extension since, but some users who upgrade 17 to 18 stay with this fu.... extension :wink:

Are you saying the current distro of Zorin comes with Thunar as the default fm, not Nautilus?

No. But that you can install it and make it the default.

"sudo apt remove folder-color" did the trick. I've been testing for a day and Nautilus never hung. Thanks, Nourpon! :grinning_face:
