No audio after relogging in

This is rather a continuation of another post of mine, 2 issues in 1.

One day audio wasn't working so I tried running pulseaudio manually.
Is this  normal?

luca@Asus:~$ pulseaudio
E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.

These messages are loaded both when audio works and when doesn't. What's more, one day I simply took a screenshot and audio was back :face_with_raised_eyebrow:.
I found some interesting warning and error logs:

26 gen 13:40:39 - pulseaudio: Error opening PCM device front:0: File or directory does not exist
26 gen 13:40:38 - kernel: [drm:atom_execute_table_locked [radeon]] *ERROR* atombios stuck executing E8C2 (len 498, WS 0, PS 4) @ 0xE903
26 gen 13:40:38 - kernel: [drm:atom_op_jump [radeon]] *ERROR* atombios stuck in loop for more than 5secs aborting
26 gen 13:40:38 - kernel: debugfs: File 'radeon_ring_uvd' in directory '0' already present!
26 gen 13:40:38 - kernel: debugfs: File 'radeon_ring_gfx' in directory '0' already present!
15:56:33 - pulseaudio: GetManagedObjects() failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

Note that between fifth and sixth there's the date change that I said on my related post (2 issues in 1), where at re-login date is set 3 days forward.

This issue has happened since Zorin installation, always after opening laptop lid, so logging in after a stand-by. I don't care much about the date and time change but restarting the audio would be cool. If someone knows a command to restart pulse audio you can write it on a comment here, I had enough of this issue.

Exploring pulseaudio search results on Logs I found this
ACPI: Added _OSI(Linux-Lenovo-NV-HDMI-Audio) but do I really need a Lenovo thing on my Asus?

Gday @Luca_Pavan ,

Try setting different sleep states in your bios.
Like enable/disable "quiet boot"
Or in "on wake" power management (balance and power saver mode)
Also be sure your bios/firmware is up to date.

Do you have fast boot enabled or disabled?

This is what i also get :+1:

Hope this may help.

You mean always on the BIOS, right? Not on Zorin Settings? But I'll check about the BIOS stuff, thanks. I hope the suspend settings are not interfering with the date. But knowing that I wasn't having this issue while using the Windows 8.1 Enterprise evaluation copy how can it be possible that's something that has to do with BIOS settings?

As this has always been happening, This can indicate that a setting prior to install, or a setting that interacts with hibernation maybe the issue.
This is why i ask !

Hence Knocking out (becoming Stuck) your audio as per above out-come.
This can be happening due to hibernation/Bios settings,

No that setting is in "Power management" in Zorin.
Change from "Balance" to "save mode" & try.

  • If this doesn't help.
Leave the change & Then try 1 change in BIOS( enable or disable "Quite boot"/etc)
If no change then leave the altered setting in BIOS & now change back the "Power management" setting.

What i think is happening is while your in hibernation, The pc is receiving pings from an open app ( like Discord/website's/ISP) causing it to become Stuck/corrupt,(Spiking your audio) when activated again via wake-up. (this may involve fast boot/etc)
All depends on your setting.

Was this up to date prior to installing Zorin Or has this been updated after dual boot install?

  • As a temporary Fix. After your pc wakes, run:

pulseaudio -k

This will kill any running audio process " But you will need to restart any open sound app's ( like discord/music player).

Depending on how your machine is setup, will also depend on the solution, These settings may fix the issue without further configuring.

Another question.
After the install of Zorin do you remember changing any of these above setting?
&
Does this also happen in windows(no sound after waking)?

One example is "Fast boot" this effect's Zorin not windows.

  • A NON related example, This issue was replicated when a customer disconnected their headset & plugged in their external speakers,(while using an online chat app, like Discord) Stopping their Audio. This issue had two problems/fixes , One was Old Bios/firmware the other was a wrong driver.

I followed Asus guide to find Fast Boot but I don't have it.

I followed Asus guide to find Secure Boot and entered a command you suggested on another post but I see I have no Secure Boot:

luca@Asus:~$ sudo mokutil --sb-state
[sudo] password di luca:
This system doesn't support Secure Boot

I don't even have hibernation. We can say that my laptop is a portable disaster.

Not sure, when I close laptop lid I close any software, but assuming that something about it is still running in background or sneakily you're right.

Good to know, noted, thanks.

No, I never changed anything on BIOS and on Windows this issue wasn't happening.

Gday @Luca_Pavan ,
This maybe because CSM is disabled or files not located in sys/efi. But not to worry,

If you get this before i return, Please tell me:

Model of ASUS notebook you have?

Is this Windows 7. ?

How old is the pc?

Please search online to see if this Pc has a replaceable/rechargeable CMOS battery...
This is more likely if it also happens(time/date change) while testing in Windows as well.
( My reasoning is, as you mentioned in your other post about the date/time changing, this can also effect (be effected by) BIOS firmware/config, further effecting items like "On-Wake-Up" ( Which in turn has maybe caused bad Audio PCM cache/firmware/kernel operations (Internet drop/stop working /etc) un-sync's the time/date.))

Try:
Looking at the Clock in BIOS, Note: if it is set to (UTC or set to something else) You may need to change to "local".
Make sure in both windows & Zorin,
Also check if both have auto time/date sync enabled..

But this can be all dealt with :+1:

Remember i need to sit in your seat & understand all the settings / changes ( how it was installed ), to get a better idea of what is happening.
More so because this has been happening since Install :+1:

Can you Please give me a screen shot of "Disks" showing your main drive.

Also run these & reply the output's. Put in Summary :gear: , it will be a long file the first command.

Summary

Lots of data

sudo dmidecode | less

also output of:

date

&

timedatectl

Also in BIOS was secure boot, enabled or disabled or CSM?
Also in windows you may find Fast boot under, Power option "what happens when i close the Lid".
( This may also be in Zorin's power setting.)

All these issue's maybe that the BIOS clock is maybe "local time" , this difference can through a spanner in the works, like upsetting firmware/ kernel. config/bad cache/etc.

Sorry i need to go.

I'll be back in, 1-2hr's.....

Some info: on Boot (on BIOS) both PXE ROM and UEFI BOOT are enabled. Also, I can't change time to local, I can only change date and time.

My laptop is an Asus K52N, originally with Windows 7, then 8.1 Enterprise and now Zorin OS Core. I can't find about its release, maybe about 2005, I really don't see a clear sentence telling the date of this model :person_shrugging:.

Interesting, I have all of them, except no audio that we are discussing now I have both audio interference sounds (sometimes while listening to audio files and opening something the audio is distorted briefly) and internet drops/random disconnections. While probably about the audio interference it's simply that opening some software I “overload” my laptop till the point that it uses so much RAM/CPU that distorts audio, about my internet drops/random disconnections instead I'm still not sure.

I couldn't copy the whole output of sudo dmidecode | less because terminal was bugged, it wasn't scrolling down while highlighting and moreover clicking Copy all was copying only the text in sight, not the whole output :face_exhaling:. Did you want to know some specific entries?

date output is

luca@Asus:~$ date
dom 9 apr 2023, 21:37:50, CEST

timedatectl output is

luca@Asus:~$ timedatectl
Local time: dom 2023-04-09 21:39:08 CEST
Universal time: dom 2023-04-09 19:39:08 UTC
                 RTC time: dom 2023-04-09 19:39:08
                Time zone: Europe/Rome (CEST, +0200)
System clock synchronized: yes
              NTP service: active
          RTC in local TZ: no

When I close the lid the laptop suspends.

You can pipe it out to a file. Run:

sudo dmidecode | less | > dmidecode-output

Then open your Home Directory and find the file named dmidecode-output and open with your text editor.

From your other posts i see you had a firmware update?

Does this mean you also updated/upgraded Zorin OS & kernel is up to date?.

When you say this " now I have both audio interference sounds "

Is sound working after sleep???
Give it 1min to settle & see if sound comes back by itself.

@Aravisian , Is the easiest solution to copying the exact output, :+1:

sudo dmidecode | less | > dmidecode-output

alternatively:
Right click in blank area Tick " Show Menubar"
The you can "Select all" & copy. :+1:

Summary

This is the complete output of "dmidecode".

I ran sudo dmidecode instead of sudo dmidecode | less but looks like the output is the same. Looks like that | less command piece made the terminal window unscrollable the first time, without that part I could highlight everything just fine :face_with_raised_eyebrow::thinking:. @Aravisian, the file generated was blank, 0 KB :person_shrugging:.

Anyway, here's the output so tap/click this sentence
luca@Asus:~$ sudo dmidecode

I updated recently but the problem is still here. I don't even know how it's possible that

About the interference sound instead it's just an example I told you when you told me that this issue of the post can be something related to BIOS configuration, but don't mind about this audio issue for now, it's really rare. By the way, audio don't return by itself, I can use the laptop the whole night and it will never work, I must restart the service manually or reboot.

SX199V. I don't know why everywhere it's listed as K52N when on the laptop itself it's named X52N .

Check for typos. I ran it on mine and it produced the full output.

Just for precision, do I have to enter sudo dmidecode | less and then sudo dmidecode | less | > dmidecode-output or only sudo dmidecode | less | > dmidecode-output? When I enter both, the last terminal line acts strangely, it glitches whenever I roll the mouse wheel, ESCOBESCOBESCOBESCOBESCO .

Anyway the output is on the summary on my previous message :point_up_2:.

This is your BIOS Ver: K52N.218

I see on ASUS Webite is shows latest Ver: Version V3.12.

Please retry updating the BIOS.

your output may look like Ver: K52N.312

Remember select "OTHER" OS on ASUS website.

Yes your Model is just : K52N :+1: maybe first Model in that range.

Yes, if I remember well, while being on Windows I updated from 215 to 218.

I don't know, are you sure that's a BIOS update? By what I remember, that's a utility for USB sticks to update BIOS but what do I need it for? To update the BIOS on Windows I just downloaded it and when I plugged my USB stick I ran the update. Will the utility show hidden updates or such? The BIOS file name was nothing like that Aflash2 Utility. Is it a utility to search for alternative BIOSes?

Yes you are correct.
Sorry, I was looking in "BIOS/Utilities" ( Good catch :+1: )

Ok so your up to date with your BIOS/firmware with Z52N.218 :+1:

Please run

sudo lshw -C multimedia

Then run

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

reboot

After reboot, again show the results for

sudo lshw -C multimedia

Before the next step Please make sure you have your machine backed up :+1:

We will now delete old audio cache,
We will do this tomorrow, as i see it's very early in Italy. ( when you wake up :+1: )

Is it normal that I have 2 audio devices? Azalia? Never heard such name, but nice. Before proceeding with other 2 commands, why do I have to backup? Is there a risk after entering them? I must know what I'll possibly face before going on, I already risked that time when I had an inconsistent filesystem :confounded:, luckily fixed half by my “idea” and half by Zorin Support Team . I hope I can do a simple and fast backup on my USB stick that I used to install Zorin OS Core or directly on laptop, like Windows' restore points. Where do you suggest me to create a backup? I'd like to save everything, to not have to do configurations, customizations, and installations again from scratch :rage:.

Try this:
Open alsamixer in terminal.

Hit F6 and select the non HDMI sound card that should be listed in dropdown.

Hit F5 to show "All" sound channels.

For output channels that are indicated MM (i.e. muted) unmute by typing M and increase the volume slider at each of them.

See if that does anything.

You can also find [Auto-Mute] channel and try setting that = Disabled

Done, thanks for suggesting this tool. I'll test a bit to see what happens between opening and closing the lid with all suggestion you proposed so far.

Yes normal.
Did you run update/upgrade & re-run lshw multimedia?

You dont have to backup, it is advisable, your can also recover using your install copy. If a mistake happens.

Now to the subject.
First run

lspci

Find the second Audio Device,
eg: 00:1b.0 or 00:1f.3 etc.

when you find it,( the second Audio Device in the list, that associated with "Audio Device: Chip-Set")
Now reconfirm with. (00:1b.0 is my example)

ls /sys/bus/pci/devices/ | grep 00:1b.0
0000:00:1b.0

You should see this with your Audio ID.

Now to clear/remove Audio cache.
'replace "0000:00:1b.0" with your device ID' Below.

echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:1b.0/remove
echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/rescan

To fix crackling in speakers on startup.

sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras
reboot

Please test your pc for issue's.

Further more it maybe a good idea to decease your swappiness, this will also help with wake-up after sleep.

  • I recommend:
    vm.swappiness=10
  • (If you had more DRAM, i would recommend vm.swappiness=0 )

To set/Edit Swappiness
Open the file (to edit swappiness)

sudo nano /etc/sysctl.conf

Next Copy & paste this into the sysctl.conf file:

vm.swappiness=10

Then
Click ctrl + x to Exit
Then 'y' to save changes.

On that Note, i would also increase your SWAP partition size,
There are lots of things to consider, but trying to keep it simple
As for your swap partition i would increase it to 4Gb.

Getting back to the BIOS battery, the machine being 15-20yrs old my also warrant a new bios battery. :+1:
Batteries should be changed every 5-10yrs as preventive maintenance.

All being said & done, the issue maybe that due to the machine only having a single core processor/2Gb RAM ,
I would further recommend trying Zorin Lite.

Keep us informed :+1:
