Hi, I just installed Zorin OS18 Core on my Windows 11 PC.
Install went great, but when re starting, it will not go to the dual boot windows where I can choose which OS to use.
I let the Zorin installation do the partitioning etc, automatically, ie alongside Windows, and when I look at the drive partitioning, I can see where Zorin is installed.
Any ideas as to why I do not get the dual boot window.
I also installed Zorin in my old DELL laptop using Windows 10, the dual boot window works just fine there.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
My PC uses Intel Core Ultra 9 185H3.10 GHz with 64G RAM.
Which OS is is default booting to?
Windows 11
Ok, so this means NVRAM is probably locked, preventing grub from writing the entry to the boot partition.
In your BIOS Settings, is "Secure Boot" enabled? If so, you must disable that, then run Grub Repair.
I did that. Secure Boot was not enabled, so I left it at that, then I ran Grub repair with Zorin in 'trial' mode via terminal, still no dual boot
The one-time boot menu key is often F12, F8, Esc, or F10.
Do any of these allow you to boot into Zorin OS?
If it is listed, does it boot - and if it does, can you open a terminal and run
efibootmgr
and post the output here?
if I use ESC during reboot, it opens up the Startup Menu, is that what you mean?
I cannot see anywhere where I can boot into Zorin except when I choose USB boot via the Start Menu, the USB has the thumb drive with the Zorin install software in it
I mean the install on the computer - you can pull the USB stick out, to ensure it does not interfere.
oh yes, the thumb drive is not plugged in, I removed it when the installer asked me to do so after the initial Zorin install and re boot.
So, as I have indicated, cannot see any way where I can boot into Zorin right now, with every re start, it goes straight to Windows 11
Above, I listed a series of keys to try:
Can you please clarify if you tried these? This is important in diagnosis, since it can define the difference between if boot files are present, but unreachable, or if they are not present.
do you want me to press those keys during a re boot or whilst it is running in Windows 11
These are pressed at the motherboard splash screen, as they are a part of BIOS - to select a One Time Boot option.
sorry....motherboard splash screen?...I've been using MAC for years now, and have only been using Windows for a short while again as I need Windows for my business, so am a bit rusty with PC/Windows terminology.
If I press ESC when re booting, it brings me to the 'blue' Start Menu
The Motherboard Splash Screen is displayed during POST (Power-On Self-Test) showing the motherboard or manufacturer logo, BIOS version, or brief hardware info before handing control over to the bootloader or OS.
While Mac comnputers do show an Apple Logo, much like a Splash screen, you are right that Mac's boot differently, and it is not called a Splash Screen.
The principle in timing is the same, however, so should feel familiar to you as the end user - that initial startup screen where the Computer Logo appears, is the Splash screen and it is during that early initialization that you tap the corresponding BIOS shortcut key to instruct it as to what step you want to take.
gotcha, thanks for the detailed explanation.
So yes, hitting the ESC key on my repeatedly during re boot will bring it to the BIOS etc screen, I call it the Start Menu
The BIOS settings screen is different from a Boot Menu - but... Many BIOS setups have a Boot section of the BIOS settings.
This is a screen we are looking for - the one which details what systems you have available to boot.
OK, let me get there and I'll get back
Boot Option #2 it shows Hard Disk Ubuntu, ignore that, that is my external drive to which I initially installed Zorin, but changed that to installing Zorin on drive C:
I am NOT trying to boot from the external hard disk
Ok, so this definitely looks like Zorin bootloader is not Present and NVRAM is locked.
Can you please follow this thread:
Here, the user said changing the windows boot manager file name worked, but he wanted rid of WIndows - you are trying to dual boot - so do not do that.
But it suggests that my memory of the File Path - is not correct.
So, we need to see that path on your computer.
