NVram Locked (Zorin not found in efibootmgr)

On Linux Mint it is the same. Well, they add a whole Desktop to it - that is of course more that here on Zorin. But they use the normal Ubuntu Kernel, too. But hey have added their Kernel Management Tool to install different available Ubuntu Kernel's. So, this Tool comes from Mint but the Kernel's are from Ubuntu, too.

Yeah. I went ahead and upgraded my Zorin install to the 6.12 kernel. What a difference. Definite boost to performance and overall system responsiveness. Knowing this is the case with 6.12 kinda does make me disappointed they won't do 6.11 or whatever for Zorin OS 17, especially since 17 is gonna continue being supported until June 2027. I don't know. I've sung Zorin OS' praises, and come back to it a few times despite being lured away by distrohopping, but now that I've tasted the "magic" of 6.12 and the boost it provided to my system, I'm all like, "why can't they just plug in 6.12, which is a LTS kernel anyway, and will be updated by Ubuntu regardless and not them?" I don't know. I'm using 6.12, and it's working much better than 6.8 on my PC. The minimal lag I did have before is gone. Applications start up much quicker. It's all very interesting.

Will reserve further comment for now ...

Gonna come back and say that this feels like a broken promise. Matter of fact, it is a broken promise. Knowing definitively that an updated kernel can improve OS performance by that much and help the user experience, but not do anything about it when it's possible (as shown by System 76 and Pop!_OS 22.04) is a letdown (especially from a customer perspective). I just bought a Zorin OS shirt and a "Powered by Zorin OS" decal sticker, for Pete's sake. Way to go ...

If this is the case, why on earth does it take so long to release zorin 18 ?

My guesses:

  • There are only 2 people (as far as I know) working on Zorin OS
  • The devs take their time rolling out updates to make sure everything is stable and most bugs have been fixed (hence why they use older Ubuntu bases rather than the latest ones)
  • The devs are very busy working on Zorin Grid - I don't know if this is actually the case, but Artyom did say in his latest interview that they are working to release Zorin Grid before Windows 10 reaches EOL this year in October

I love Zorin OS, and will keep using it as I don't require the latest 'everything', but it would still be nice to get some newer features GNOME implements. I'd also like it if the devs communicated more about their progress, things they are currently working on, and planned features that may come in the future. It seems these things would vastly improve with the expansion of the development team, but I don't know when or if that's going to happen.

So much this. Yes. Agree 100%.

I saw Artyom's responses in the Firefox thread. Excellent communication. Good explanations. If they'd be like that all the time about everything (including the kernel issue), that'd play out so much differently and positively. That I guarantee. EDIT: And a mea culpa, too, would've helped so much.

Gnome does not implement stuff, they only strip it down much further .
