OS 18 crashes after running through Upgrade install

Upgrade from OS 17 to 18 ran through complete upgrade to instruct restart to complete install. On restart reports Oh No! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occured and the system can't recover. Please contact a system administrator. No idea what to do next

On my old MacBook Pro I upgraded from version 17 to 18, using the upgrade app. Upgrading finished without any issues. Rebooting went well as well, I unlocked the disk, but before arriving at the login, I ran into the "Oh No! Something has gone wrong" screen.
