Password fail

After today's updates of software, Zorin 17 core disallows booting up with the present password. I have tried about 7 times but I cannot boot up?

I was away for only a month overseas.

You could try it with this guide:

So, You turned on the Machine, it booted up, You logged in with Your Password, making Updates, the Machine rebooted and then Your Password didn't worked anymore?

Correct. If there is ever I make a typo, the field will wobble, and I re-enter it again checking my results. However, after the updates and entering in several times the correct PW, it acts as if OK, does not wobble, and goes back to PW field again.

OK Forpli, I will give it a go.

No go from this, problems with youtube viewing (hearing and syntax.

it starts up with TTY alright, I will try fsck next.

I updated the home theatre NUC with the updates and the same thing has happened. I think it's at their end?

Booted up with zorin18 USB and into "try Zorin". Used "boot repair" and it said that it did complete the repair. However, when going back to standard boot, nothing changed?

I don't have root access to do e2fsck. Went to grub menu in "recovery mode" and did fsck.
/lib/recovery-mode/recovery-menu: line80:
/etc/default/reS: no such file or directory (?)

Hi, can you boot into recovery mode? Do you see a GRUB menu? If not you may need to edit the GRUB config file via your live Zorin. If you do have GRUB, then choose advanced recovery, then on the menu that appears, arrow down to Root terminal.
Press Enter key to continue when the terminal prompt appears. Using @Forpli s guide, once you have changed the password you should turn off the computer and reboot. I think I covered e2fsck in the unofficial manual. You might need Kali Linux in live mode; need to check.

Take a look here:

yes, grub visible and have gone to root level. I had to rebuild the NUC to Zorin18 as had spent a day and a half via GROK to no improvement. Before I do the other tower I will use kali Linux which I have on a USB.

The tower running 17.3 Education did not fail after the latest upgrades I notice. Perhaps that flavour is the exception? However, each time I upgrade on that tower, it says that I do not have internet connection, which is BS. When I close the field, all of a sudden it wants to upgrade and does so successfully?

No luck either with Kali Linux using fsck either. same loop problem. After 3 of my devices going down after the last backups, I have upgraded them to Zorin18, fingers crossed this doesn't happen again, or the repair default becomes clear. I did put in 2 days of repair strategies to no avail, and i just had to get back to a stable work situation. My cataracts do not help of course.

Sorry to hear about cateracts and unsuccessful use of Kali Linux. Was that failed attempt after following that weblink I posted?

I already had that link from you in the past, had a paper copy of it.

Sorry to hear no progress. Just to rewind, is this an issue with both Wayland and Xorg? The default compositor is Wayland. When Zorin used to come with only Xorg you could use the option to delete .Xauthority and start again. Don't know if this is possible under Wayland.

Have you tested the drive with a S.M.A.R.T. test?
What you describe sounds like your password is working fine - but the desktop is crashing before you reach it - sending you back to the login screen.
You said the other Zorin copy updated - perhaps it is not the contents of the update - but the SIZE of it that matters.

Did Root overflow? This can cause file corruption and inability to load the desktop.
