Preparing an Acer notebook to replace Windows 10

Today I successfully installed a different distro to Zorin on a client's Acer notebook with Windows 10 on it and hit a few barriers before succeeding.

First, press F2 to enter the BIOS. One setting I changed was to enable the F12 key. This is to use it at boot time to choose what to boot from. I was using a thumb drive with Ventoy that had multiple .iso's on it.

The Hard drive was set to AHCI so no need to change that.

When disabling UEFI to Legacy in Boot order screen, the boot order became greyed out, so I enabled UEFI again. Booting off item 6. USB HDD had to be moved to the top of the list. (Follow the BIOS guide on the right how to do this.)

So I booted off the USB and was confronted with a MOK key error. I had to accept the EFI file of Ventoy to be accepted into the MOK key. I could then boot from the USB.

The client was very happy with LMDE 7 I installed. Why? or Why did I choose the OS over Zorin? It was an old Notebook with 4 Gb of RAM (very slow) and reading a post on the forum that Zorin was too slow on a similar spec machine I decided to play it safe.

One issue I could not resolve was partitioning. I launched GParted to setup manual partitions, but even after applying the changes the Acer Notebook was still pointing to the Windows partitions I thought I had deleted which meant having to opt for a reboot and auto-install.
I explained about the need for ClamAV to scan emails that might have dangerous attachments. It got installed as did Evolution as they were used to Outlook. The MSN account was identified correctly but had to have 2FA from MS via their smartphone to allow Gnome Evolution access to their email.

It was refreshing to meet someone who told me "I know I could pay for an extra year of Windows 10 support but it would just be putting off having (GNU/)Linux needed to be installed 12 months later".

You can read the client's feedback on the appropriate page on my website.

[The client had forgotten to ask if I could do anything with a Samsung Tablet that they believed might be infected. I said we could arrange another date and I would not charge as it would be a learning experience for me (and a chance to put Zorin on it).]
