Problems updating Zorin OS

Hi folks,
My apologies for making my first post, a request for help. I am having issues trying to update Zorin OS. Problems occur in both the Software Updater and the terminal.

The problem

  • If I run the Software Updater, it returns "Failed to download packages, check your internet connection".
  • Other times, it loads and shows a list of updates. I click install now, it starts to run the updates with a progress bar / "downloading". It then returns the same as above - "Failed to download packages, check your internet connection".
  • If I run sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y from the terminal, I get a bunch of errors culminating in "Failed to fetch https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/zorinos/stable/ubuntu/pool/main/z/zorin-exec-guard/zorin-exec-guard_1.5.8_all.deb Could not connect to ppa.launchpadcontent.net:443 (185.125.190.80). - connect (111: Connection refused)"

Things I have tried

  • I have googled and searched/read a lot of similar posts on this forum.
  • In Software Updater, I have gone to Settings-Zorin Software-Download From-Other and clicked on Select Best Server. This does a series of tests and returns variable results including servers from Columbia, Germany etc. If I select Choose Server-Close-Reload, It does a cache refresh followed by a series of errors such as pk-client-error-quark: W: https://download.virtualbox.org.... Key is stored in legacy trusted.gpg keyring..... I get many of these errors.
  • In terminal, I have tried variants such as
    • sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y --allow-downgrades --fix-missing
    • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y --allow-downgrades --fix-missing

My OS Details

  • I am running Zorin OS 18.1 Core in Ireland
  • cat /etc/os-release returns

PRETTY_NAME="Zorin OS 18.1"
NAME="Zorin OS"
VERSION_ID="18"
VERSION="18.1"

  • I am reasonably tech savy but no expert when it comes to Linux. I am a recent Windows convert so all the text above is a result of google searches etc. In other words please go easy on me:) I'd be grateful for any help. I just want to keep my OS updated. Thank you.

There may still be ubuntu server problems and high demand so that the servers are overloaded:

Try it later again. These issues may persist for a few more days.

I had the same problem, which I reported. It persisted this afternoon, and when I clicked on OK, the updates to be installed came up. I tried again with a software update, and there was no error. I tried it twice. So I think the problem has been resolved.

I should say I have been experiencing this issue for several weeks. I fear it's not just down to busy servers.

A post was split to a new topic: Upgrading by two releases

Hi and welcome.

in Software Updater settings, is your Software source set to your country server or Main Server?

I've tried with both my country's server and the main server, and the issue still persisted for me. I disabled the ppa's to update, which worked find, then as soon as I re-enabled them, I got a cache updating error as well.

Hi and welcome.

I think it is a case of wait and see. When servers go down from a attack and repairs have been made it takes time for everything to get back to full functionality. Please be patient.

In the mean time don't forget to download the Unofficial Manual for Zorin 18 Core (still a work in progress):

Hello Foks.
I have a second system, Zorin OS 18.1 Core, beside my Win 10.
"Funny" Coincidence: Yesterdy i've installed Librewolf
and this Morning after starting my Zorin PC it donz start the auto Updater. First i think its about the Librewolf Installation.
So i will wait a bit.

Hi and welcome.

It could be taking time to get backup where you are on the globe following the DDoS attacks on Canonicals Servers.

In the meantime you could download the Unofficial Manual for Zorin 18 Core (still a work in progress) from here:

I spent sometime with ChatGPT and fed it various terminal outputs, error messages etc. It asked me to list my update repo sources using

ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

The resulting list showed some duplicates so it advised me to delete these as follows

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/zorinos-ubuntu-.sources
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/zorinos-ubuntu-
.sources.save

Then relisting the repo sources shows

mozilla.list mozilla.list.save virtualbox.list virtualbox.list.save zorin.list zorin.list.save

Then I reran updates using

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

The updates ran without error. I then ran the Software Updater UI and ran it. It ran without error.

I find the whole thing a bit worrying. I've spent a lot of time searching this and similar issues and I see a lot of people having similar issues. I think the one thing that needs to be bulletproof and just work, is the updater. I don't know if I did any harm using ChatGPT above. The fix it suggests seems to work but I don't truly understand whats going on, why there are duplicates, why can't an updater detect and either suggest fixes or resolve this type of issue. I cannot live with any errors in the output of a software update because the output is so verbose. Once I start to see any errors, it gets scary with the sheer volume.

That was not the best Thing to do. That are Zorin Source Files. And that the Update runed after deleting them was because the Sources are on Launchpad. And that doesn't work right now.
