Laptop:
HP Elitebook 840 G11 (Intel(R) Core(TM) Ultra 7 155U)
OS version: Zorin OS 17.3
Problem:
After a update my screen freezes randomly every 5 - 30 minutes. I then need to manually restart the laptop via the power button. After figuring out the update had upgraded my kernel to 6.8.0-57-generic, I reverted back to 6.8.0-52-generic. This fixed the problem for now.
Things I've looked into first:
Wayland: I thought the problem was wayland. Switching to xorg did not fix the problem.
Disabling animations: A different post told it fixed screen freezes after disabling animations. This did not fix it.
Logs: There are no logs inidicating anything wrong in dmesg, syslog or kern.log after the screen freezes occur.
I want to report this in the hope that I'm not alone on this. And perhaps feedback on what else I can try to find out what the issue could be.
No GPU, just integrated Intel graphics. Fractional scaling is off, I believe this is default, never touched it. Resolution is 1920x1200 (60hz), these are default on the laptop aswell.
Do you have any extensions installed on the system that aren't there by default? And if so, which ones? There have been instances occasionally about an extension causing issues such as this, so it may be worth disabling them and see if that might be it.
This could just simply be a kernel regression and keeping it on the older kernel might be a solution that works fine for you. You could also try a newer kernel and see if the situation is any better there as well:
Or if your system runs perfectly on the older version and you're fine with that, you could make that the one boot by default and just wait for another update to 6.8 to come through and see if that one runs any better or not:
