Hello to all.
First time post. Thanks to all of you who share your knowledge. Background: I had been a Windows user since 3.1. But have been browsing Linux distributions for years. I have decided to transition to Linux and after eight different installs and trials, I have settled on Zorin Pro.
So, I have been a VMware Workstation user (work and home) since V7.1. I have several VMs, that I still use occasionally, and looking for a recommendation for how to host these VMs in Zorin?
I see Virtual Box, Wine, and others and hope the members and developers could give me guidance.
I am pleased with the Zorin 18 update.
WINE you can write off. It's not for VMs; it's a compatibility layer. You would be installing and running individual Windows programs directly in your Linux filesystem. I'm afraid I'm not much use on the recommendation part. I've used Boxes a bit but not been impressed.
I suggest you Install QEMU/KVM system to host VMs on Zorin. I think QEMU/KVM is the best way to go when using VMs. There are tools in this system to import VMware VMs.
Hello Locklear93, and thanks for your insights. I had tried Wine back a few years with a PIM (Time and Chaos) and had issues with instability. Boxes ie, Virtual Boxes?
When I referred to Boxes, I was referring to... well, "Boxes." If you search Zorin's Software store for Boxes, it will come up by that name.
WINE will typically either work wonderfully or be a disaster, and updates to software can shift it from one to the other. At the moment, as mentioned in a pinned thread though, there seems to be a dependency issue with Wine's packages anyway, so using Bottles or other front ends that handle WINE themselves, rather than installing it at the system level, seems to be the way to go. It's my understanding that the issue lies with Ubuntu's repositories (upon which Zorin relies).
