Red Dead Redemption 2

I've tried to get Red Dead Redemption 2 running on Zorin 18 but ultimately, failed; the Rockstar launcher simply will not work. If I buy the game off Steam, will it work? All the other Steam games I have work fine.

Should work on Steam, although you might want to set launcher option to if you on wayland:

PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 %command% -dx12 -FastLaunch

It's the display protocol that Zorin uses by default. The other is xorg. Which video card do you have?

Note: that most testers uses Radeon cards which is recommendable on Linux (as you see the testers have radeon cards).

Okay. You may be better off to switch to Xorg on Zorin (you can always switch back if it doesn't work for you). Xorg is recommended for those you uses Nvidia cards.

You can switch by the display protocols by:

  1. log out
  2. click your user name
  3. a cog appear
  4. Now choose Zorin OS (which is xorg) or Zorin Wayland

Back to RDR2. Have you tried running the non-Steam version of it via Steam?

Yes, I've tried that. Closest I've gotten to, is where it tries contacting the Rockstar server, but it times out.

Every time I click on the Launcher via my steam library, it opens up the setup process which asks you to choose language, etc. Every time.

Hmm.. Try the GE version of Proton. You can install the GE Proton with the Proton Up app from the store.

I've bitten the bullet and bought the game from Steam. Hopefully this will navigate a lot of the obstacles caused by Rockstar's unwillingness to provide adequate support for Linux. Thank you very much for your help, it's appreciated.

And it works. Sort of. It will not go Fullscreen. I'm using Vulkan because DX12 wouldn't work, and ProtonExperimental.

Yes. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game for a fresh start.

Setting the window to Window BOrderless and redoing the resolution to 1920x1080 (or whatever it is), has worked.
