I actually did something even hackier (and way less attractive) by painting a thick line over my wallpaper, pretending it to be the top bar while in reality it was just transparent. All so that I could place a conky widget there:

I won't get any awards from this but it's functional. I had to hack my way around it though: made the top bar transparent using Transparent Shell extension, then quickly edit the wallpaper with gimp to paint the top bar on the same color as it was. After than it's a matter of playing with the coordinates, color and font which I will still have to adjust some other time. [desktop]

It works by modifying the stylesheet that controls the visual appearance. I wouldn't mind taking a look at the exact code myself, either...

Change desktop context menu background

How can I change the background color of the desktop context menu?
