Since update impossible to read DVD images

Hi again folks,

Everything's in the title, since the update to Zorin 17, I've been unable to read any DVD iso file, whatever software I use...

Any idea ?

Thanks.

Gday @JMBL

Have you tried resizing the system font in "Zorin Appearances"?

Can you screenshot the issue please?

@Ocka I am not sure how Apperance/font would stop access to .iso on DVD media. Maybe you misunderstood "image"? If not please explain that relationship.

@JMBL If this suddenly occurred since a kernel update, try booting an older generic kernel version via grub menu "Additional Options for Zorin", to test if new kernel is the issue.

Yes Zaba, i was confused & also misread the issue,
I had in mind that the OP couldn't read (See) the info within the file...
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help anyway.

Will try that, then we'll see what comes next... Thanks.

Gday @JMBL
We may need a little more info as to what error etc that you get?

Do you have other .iso dvd's you can try?

Can you play dvd's movies/music via the CD-Rom?

If your using a virtual machine,
Have you checked if your bios has visualization enabled?

Ok, here's the situation :

  • using a different kernel doesn't help,
  • no virtual machine installed,

Concerning .iso files, I've got several on my HD, encoded from DVD I own, and been using those files without any problems, until the last Zorin update, tried them all, with different software. Here are the results :

  • with Zorin default video player : getting the error message "DVD source is lacking, download it from Software". Tried to do it, but it seems there's no such thing in the databe
  • with VLC : the file just don't play
  • with Kodi : getting an error message saying that something's wrong with the files, should check the error journal to have more info. Haven't checked it yet (don't remember how, as I've never had any problem with Kodi, that's something I've not done so often)

Playing physical DVDs :

  • with Zorin default app : as before
  • with VLC : everything just fine (except that I don't like this app)
  • with Kodi : video is fine, so is menu navigation, but no sound at all (checked and double checked the sound output options, no help)

My opinion is something kind of codec or library is missing, but I can't figure which one, netiher can I figure when and why it disappeared.

Concerning my computer, I can't get the command inxi to work...

Have you yet run

sudo apt install --reinstall ubuntu-restricted-extras

Just did, not helping... :expressionless:

In Software & Updates > Other software, do you have CDROM: Zorin OS checkmarked on?
If so, please checkmark it to Off
Allow Software & Updates to refresh when you close it.
Open terminal and run

sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade

Gday @JMBL
Thanks for the elaboration it helps us greatly.
I was also thinking that the cdrom maybe checked in updates?
After the above instructions from Aravisian & still no luck.
First i would also try adding the dvd packages.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install libdvd-pkg

Then after that run

sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg

Then

reboot

Yes correct you should be able to see something in your journalctl

journalctl -xe

& Ctrl+z to Close.

you could also look in places like
/var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages

For INXI , you may need to remove & Install again.
You may find removing Kodi & installing again may fix some issue's.

Also if still no luck ,
Do you have another dvd drive?
or
An external dvd drive you can test with?
Hope this helps.

@Aravisian : followed your instructions but didn't help

@Ocka : after installing and rebooting, the sole difference is that kodi is now flunking when trying to read an .iso file.

After I'm a bit lost, could please precise what I should do with that command :

journalctl -xe

Besides, I've no other DVD drive to use with my laptop.

i took this as you forgot the command, so i added it so you could check if the error is logged.
You can also look in

I'm actually having the same problem. :scream:

With the Flatpak version of VLC, DVDs play.

With the APT version of VLC, DVDs don't play.

Before 17.1, DVDs played fine with VLC APT.

Hi guys !

Sorry for being a stranger, but I haven't as much spare time as I wish for.

Here's the output of the command :

journalctl -xe

Gday @JMBL

I can't read your pc language , But i see "RED" which normal is an error.

Can you play movies/photos etc direct from your pc's home directory?
Not using the dvd.
have you tried copying from the dvd to your Hdrive, does it run ok etc?

Also did your "UPGRADE" using the "Upgrader" from Zorin 16 to 17 or did you install Zorin 17 via usb stick?
sorry if i've asked this before.

Hi again @Ocka ,

I can play movies/photos on my laptop, the problem concerns only .iso files. No way I can play them on my laptop, but they play fine on a different computer. I when I try to play DVDs, I've got no sound (as I've already stated previously).

I upgraded my laptop using the system upgrader.

As a test:
Can you download Z17.1 Core .iso file, verify the SHA256 of the downloaded .iso, burn that .iso to USB stick as installation media.
Then boot that USB and choose "Try Zorin" NOT install Zorin.
From the Live USB version of Z17.1 Core can you see if you have the same issue with DVD images. Note Z17.1 Core will be slow running off a USB stick.

EDIT: Has anyone suggested you check your Software sources for any residual Focal repositories? Z17 is based on Ubuntu 22.04 i.e. Jammy. There have been cases of users having a mix of Focal and Jammy after using the Upgrader tool.

Ok, will try to see what's happening when booting from a live usb stick.

Concerning checking the Software sources, can you be a bit more specific, please ? I'm not sure to know what you want me to do.
