"Software update failed" after every restart

Thank you for the information. It seems safe to do. I just run your commands and then rebooted the computer. But I still have the error message about the failing update. Here is complete output, however it is in Norwegian (is there a way to have Terminal in English instead of Norwegian without changing everything to english?):

xxx@xxx:~$ sudo apt -y autoremove && sudo apt update && sudo apt -y full-upgrade

xxx@xxx:~$

By the way, I just today changed download mirrors to blix.com, previous it was setup automatically.

The fresh install itself is more likely to solve the problem rather than the choice of language. Try to take the same steps as you did before, and later change the language if you want to.

The warnings you're seeing in that last terminal output mean you have configured the same package sources multiple times but that shouldn't cause any issues, it's just a warning. But just in case take a look in Software Store -> Software Repositories -> Other Software, and see that you don't have any duplicate selections there. For reference this is how it looks for me in a relatively recent fresh install:

Have you tried Aravisian's suggestion above? I found a thread on GitHub with a similar issue, apparently also caused by something related to the firmware update but was supposed to be fixed by now.

Thank you. I am going to wipe the disk and do a reinstall. Then not "try" but strait to the install. And also use English language.

It seems to be same setup I have as in your image at Software Store -> Software Repositories -> Other Software, here is my settings:

Also I want to mention that my wireless network needed a "alternative driver", could that one be the cause of the error message about failed update? Here is a image of that:

However I have tried to change it to the 2 option (Ikke bruk enheten/Don't use the device), but it did not solve the problem. However if it is the cause of the error message, maybe I need to remove the driver completely? (I am currently only using wired internet, so I can safely manage without the wireless).

I have not tried Aravisian suggestion above. Is it meant that I should run this command:

sudo apt install --reinstall fwupdmgr

Because I am not sure if that is only meant as a edit to Radosk suggestions above, or if it is meant to be running that command without additional commands?

Edit: I am doing Aravisian command now. Will post update soon.

Vow. I tried Aravisian's suggestion now, and it seems that could be the problem, because it says "Could not find the package fwupdmgr":

xxx@xxx:~$ sudo apt install --reinstall fwupdmgr
[sudo] passord for xxx:

E: Klarer ikke å finne pakken fwupdmgr
xxx@xxx:~$

Google translate of the above output:

xxx@xxx:~$ sudo apt install --reinstall fwupdmgr
[sudo] password for xxx:

Creates an overview of dependencies ... Done
Reading state information ... Done
E: Unable to find package fwupdmgr
xxx@xxx:~$

Can you advice if I should do anything to install fwupdmgr or if I should be better off by doing a complete new install of Zorin? Strange that fwupdmgr is missing?

Are you running ZorinOS inside a virtual machine by any chance? Just asking because I am, and also don't have that installed but on a separate machine with Debian it's there.

However, you can still check what's the output of:

sudo systemctl status fwupd

EDIT: Also, are you able to just run fwupdmgr get-devices even if it says it can't find it?

Thank you! No, it is not a virtual machine. It is a Lenovo ThinkCentre with AMD Ryzen 5 and only one SSD drive (also I did not create any partition on it). Here is a image of my system from "About" in settings:

It is some message in output about "failed" like this line:

Here is the complete output:

xxx@xxx:~$ sudo systemctl status fwupd

I feel this is progress! However I don't think I am able to understand what to do without help.

To be perfectly honest, this is a bit too far of my comfort zone and expertise . I just had a feeling of where to poke to take a look, hoping something would lead to the error. But at this point, I'm not feeling so confident I can be of help anymore.

The thread that I mentioned I saw on GitHub was fixed by one of the developers pushing an update so there was no action needed from the end user. Could be that, but it sounds like this is something more specific (else we would have more people reporting similar issues).

If you are fine with waiting for a better reply, Aravisian and other members in the forum are more knowledgeable than I am on this topic. If we can figure this out it may help others in the future that have the same issue. Otherwise, a fresh install may just fix the issue entirely on the spot.

You have been helping me a lot. Thanks to you I now have much more information. I will try to search in Google and learn, and will try to wait a little longer before doing a reinstall, just in case Aravisian or others might be able to help now (because of your help) that I have so much more new information about the problem. Again, thank you!

My head is spinning. I am searching in Google based on my previous posted output when doing:
sudo systemctl status fwupd

Wich give errors like this:
failed to get releases for UEFI dbx: No releases found: Not compatible with org.freedesktop.fwupd version 1.7

So I am searching for that string in Google and found this security bug posted 2023-07-24: Bug #2028548 “fwupd too old to get and install releases for UEFI...” : Bugs : fwupd package : Ubuntu

He basically have the same error as me. He also write:

Is it possible to back-port this fix to Focal / Jammy? I understand we can manually carry a USB stick to the machine and get the updated BIOS firmware installed that way, but fwupdmgr is way more efficient

However I am not able to locate or understand where the "fix" he is talking about is described, and maybe it also would not be possible for me to apply the fix, but that it need to be done by the developers of Zorin? I would like to try the fix if it is possible for me.

I also did this command: journalctl -u fwupd.service - and here is the very very long output of that (I deleted a lot of lines from the end, because it was to much):

Do I need fwupd installed? Can I safely remove it? I suspect that will solve my problem with the error message about update after every reboot. I found this wich was very relevant in the mint forum: fwupd fails every day - Linux Mint Forums

So now I am trying to decide if I can delete or disable the service? If so, what is best, delete or disable? Here is both methods from the thread I linked to in mint forum above:

... or you can simply :

sudo apt-get remove fwupd

and be done with it - if you don't constantly (or ever) need it

Inspired by this thread here, I just did that
since I know I will not need such a service.

or

Try this:

sudo systemctl mask fwupd.service fwupd-refresh.service fwupd-refresh.timer

Mask will link specified unit files to /dev/null, making it impossible to start them. This a stronger version of disable, since it prohibits all kinds of activation of the unit, including enablement and manual activation.

As a final remark, to me it looks like a security bug (here is the link I posted before about it), but I could be wrong if this is security related in the same way in Zorin 17? However I am eager to try to disable or delete fwupd if I don't need it for Zorin 17 to work correct? So that I can see if that solves the problem with the error message after reboot.

That is some impressive work for someone who wasn't ready to run updates via the terminal

I would much rather disable it before removing it entirely. If something goes wrong you'll still be able to enable it back very easily. I tried to run that command on a virtual machine and I see no changes, other that now the service reports as being inactive after a reboot.

So, just give it a try?

I know how to use Google, but it is hard when I don't have the skills to understand what I'm reading and what it actually means. Feels confusing, but it seems I was lucky this time!

Thank you for testing the command! I have now disabled fwupd and restarted the computer, and it works! The error message about the failed update is gone! I did this:

xxx@xxx:~$ sudo systemctl mask fwupd.service fwupd-refresh.service fwupd-refresh.timer
[sudo] passord for xxx:
Created symlink /etc/systemd/system/fwupd.service → /dev/null.
Created symlink /etc/systemd/system/fwupd-refresh.service → /dev/null.
Created symlink /etc/systemd/system/fwupd-refresh.timer → /dev/null.
xxx@x:~$

I will now click on "Solution" on this post, as this was a solution for me. However I will reinstall Zorin 17 tomorrow, and this time I will not use the "try" but install directly. I will report here if I get error message about failed update after reinstall or not. If I get it, I will just disable fwupd again.

Great! I'm seeing now that some people have gone as far as removing the Gnome Software Store (called Software in ZorinOS) to tackle the issue. I guess the only consequence is that firmware updates won't be coming automatically. Just something to keep in mind.

Thank you for giving me more additional information. I will make a note on that I might have to do firmware updates manually (another thing I will need to learn about). After reading your reply, I wanted to test if "Software" in Zorin still works, and I installed FileZilla. It installed with no problems! However, I am still hoping that I don't need to disable fwupd after I reinstall Zorin - but my gut feeling is that the problem will return. But, I have a fix now, so thats ok.

I have now reinstalled Zorin 17 (without clicking "Try"), and there is no error messages about "update failed". I have restarted several times, and I have also installed and customized the same things as the last time, and still the error has not returned. So it seems it only happens to users that clicked "Try" before they installed.

Edit: Maybe when using "Try" an older version of fwupd is installed, and as posted previous, the older version has a bug so it can't be upgraded. But maybe when not using "Try", a newer version of fwupd is installed. To me it seems this could be the explanation.

Edit 2: Nevermind about my first edit above. I just did "sudo systemctl status fwupd" and it still says "failed to get releases for UEFI dbx: No releases found: Not compatible with org.freedesktop.fwupd version 1.7.9, requires >= 1.9.1" when starting the firmware update daemon:

jan. 14 16:10:32 emit systemd[1]: Starting Firmware update daemon...
jan. 14 16:10:33 emit fwupd[1848]: 15:10:33:0057 FuEngine failed to get releases for UEFI dbx: No releases found: Not compatible with org.freedesktop.fwupd version 1.7.9, requires >= 1.9.1
jan. 14 16:10:33 emit fwupd[1848]: 15:10:33:0062 FuEngine failed to get releases for UEFI dbx: No releases found: Not compatible with org.freedesktop.fwupd version 1.7.9, requires >= 1.9.1
jan. 14 16:10:33 emit systemd[1]: Started Firmware update daemon.

So I will now have to consider if I should disable fwupd or not. I am afraid it could be a security risk to not disable it. Anyway. The thread problem is solved by disable it, so I will not continue posting more about it, unless others want to share opinions of whats best to do (disable or not). I still have not any error message about updates, it is only visible in terminal.

I guess from your Edit2, the problem is now considered not "Solved".
I suggest you untick the "Solved" flag at your post #20, otherwise you may be turning away help from forum members thinking you have solved it.

Thank you. Ok. I have now untick the "Solved" flag. However the problem with a visual error message about updates after each restart is solved by doing a direct install or disable fwupd, but it seems the underlying problem is not solved by a direct install, it is just not visible outside of terminal. However the problem is solved both visual and in terminal by disabling fwupd, but wheter this is a good enough way to solve it or not, I am sure could be debated.

There is a suggested cause and addressed fix here:

Thank you. I have carefully read the thread you linked to. I am however not going to try any solutions posted there, simply because I am not able to understand what I am doing. If someone tries any solutions, I hope they will share it here. Currently I have decided to disable fwupd, and the plan is to enable it every few months or so, to see if there is any fix applied, if not just disable it again.
