[SOLVED] Video very sluggish after latest update for ZORIN 17.3

Greetings all,
whenever major updates are released i get a tad bit nervous, and sure enough here i am, with an issue with my video after the latest update.
Granted my system is older with an old gtx970 but nevertheless things were running great ! play all my games fine, VM running fine, with dual monitors and Zorin just pumps right along.
( just completed another fresh install 2 weeks ago )
After that last update ( 2 days ago ) all my video is very sluggish, even browsing and scrolling in the browser is very choppy , nothing with video appears to be smooth any more when it was absolutely perfect previous to me updating.

tried removing and re-installing NVIDIA graphics driver,
tried proprietary 570 etc any and all appear to be behaving the same way.
back to the normal 535 driver now and still no luck :frowning:

any other recommendations ? or suggestions ?
any and all comments are appreciated,

thank you all in advance.

Also, are you logging in on Xorg (X11)?

Did you checked if You still in xorg Mode? Because with Nvidia it is on Zorin 17 better to use Xorg. You can check that in Settings>About. look if there stands Wayland or X11.

Another Thing: Do You have all Codecs installed? Take a Look in the software Center and there scroll all the Way down and click on the ''Codecs'' Button. then You should see an Overview with codecs. Check if there all installed. As an Addition, you could install the ubuntu-restricted-extras Package. That brings more Codecs. But together with it Microsoft Fonts. So, You have to accept a Licence Agreement.

How are Your Refresh Rate set up? Is Fractional Scaling active?

@Aravisian appreciate the response was relieved to see people commenting today
this is what i see under settings about

@Ponce-De-Leon i really appreciate the response, i believe i am in xorg mode i pasted a screen shot as @Aravisian mentioned the same thing.
i can take a look at the codec, although never had a need for it before

it appears like the scaling is disabled

I did not say to install the nvidia driver, i said you should try their kernel.

@Michel ahh pardon my ignorance, i am no pro by any means
thought i would start from the top
ok attempting the kernel section

UPDATE
@Michel executed the commands for the kernel section, seems to be the same outcome
perhaps a greater force is telling me to buy a new system since mine is 10 years old now :smiling_face_with_tear:

checking what video driver is currently running, now it seems to have been set to the 565 for the first time.

My notebook is 13 years old and running great.

Did you remove the pop repo after upgrading kernel ?

@Ponce-De-Leon ok! some progress,
i checked software center and at the very bottom i did have quite a few different codecs installed, and went ahead and ran $ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

rebooted the computer and success !!
i noticed immediately the difference in performance and behaviour,
in fact, applications/games are performing even better than before,
so it seems that i was missing key codecs and the install of "ubuntu-restrictred extras" package really did do the trick !
or perhaps in addition to the driver changing to 565 as well with the pairing of the installation of restricted extras all did the trick ?
wow im very relieved and thank you all again for the responses !
you just bought me some more time until i finally cave and buy a new system

Thank you Thank you Thank you ! :beers:

yes i did remove it as instructed in the post.

haha amazing - this is why i love this so much, and i refuse to let go of the old system.
To the bitter end !!

Good to hear, reboot and boot into kernel 6.8 to see if the issue comes back. Your running the 6.12.10 kernel :sunglasses:

Welcome to the linux journey :sunglasses:. I get the same feeling on 2 machines here running a rolling release. My main notebook still has pop os installed which i do love, but i have fallen in love for endeavour os which i keep using on my wifes 13 years old notebook everyday. I didn’t touch my own notebook for over 2 weeks … which is unique
