Some AppImages and Flatpaks Exhibiting Strange Issues After Recent Update

The Gist of the Issue

I somewhat recently took an update (I'm guessing between Sep. 28 and Sep. 30). Now some AppImages and flatpaks I've installed don't work or crash in certain situations whereas they worked perfectly fine before. I'm not sure what caused the issue, and I'd love help in determining the cause because it's become a major blocker for me. I'm at my wit's end on trying to research and remediate the issue myself.

Background

On 9/30 I noticed an issue opening the AppImage I have for Aseprite 1.3.16.1; the window would open, but it would be completely black and it wouldn't do anything. Fans revved and my CPU spiked. The output for the app made it seem like it was hanging on initializing its GUI. I tried installing Aseprite with its deb, but it had the same issue. I tried using the latest AppImage (since 1.3.16.1 is a little behind), but it also had the same issue. On 9/28 I used Aseprite's AppImage without issue, so some update I pulled down between the 28-30 of September did something. I remember Zorin notifying me there were updates in that time period. I accepted them and went on with my day.

The issue with Aseprite prompted me to look at my other AppImages and other apps to see if they had similar issues. The LMMS 1.2.2 AppImage I have opened fine, but trying to open its Settings made it crash. Kdenlive (latest flatpak) seemed to launch fine but would crash after setting up the basics of a project configuration. OBS (latest flatpak) opened fine but opening its Settings would cause a crash. In OBS' case, I tried installing via snap and it seemed to work fine.

Interestingly, my Krita 5.2.14 AppImage seems to work perfectly fine, as does my latest flatpak of Discord, so it doesn't seem to be a "all my AppImages and flatpaks are broken" situation. Since the issues with the other apps seemed to be somewhat related to windowing (maybe?), I tried triggering actions in the apps that would get them to make windows. Krita opened windows fine. For Discord, I don't know of an action in that app that gets it to request a window so I couldn't try it there, but the rest of the app seemed to run fine.

Observations/Troubleshooting

  • I tried swapping to X11 thinking it might be a windowing issue. That didn't resolve anything.
  • I tried repairing flatpak installations with flatpak repair.
  • I've updated many times through the Software Updater, the Software app, and the terminal with apt update and apt upgrade hoping I was experiencing some known bug that's since been patched. No luck.
  • I tried using earlier kernels (6.17 & 7.0.0-34)
  • I tried running LMMS via terminal so I could see its logs. When it would crash, I'd get this log: /tmp/.mount_lmms-1Cq4c0b/AppRun: line 24: 6880 Segmentation fault QT_X11_NO_NATIVE_MENUBAR=1 "$DIR"/usr/bin/lmms.real "$@". I don't really understand what it's complaining about and Google wasn't super helpful; naively I think it's weird that it mentions something to do with X11 when I'm running Wayland when that log occurs.

Relevant APT History

I figured it had to be something I took down between Sep. 28-30 so I found the APT history log for that time period, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about the various packages to know what might cause my problems:

BLESS you, that worked :raising_hands: I found mentions of bubblewrap in my research, but didn't come across all this webkit stuff. Thank you so much, this was driving me nuts!
