Let me try to clarify:
Ah, OK.
I now understand.
He has to boot from Live USB to do this operation.
@100WCharge, make a backup of your personal data in addition to the Rescuezilla image backup before you initiate this Live session.
Gotcha
Reinstall takes time, along with adding that data after reinstalling. I would rather ignore it for now.
The space is behind the main partition. GParted and gnome-disks can only extend the main partition if it is in front of the main partition. I hope that if I try from Live-USB, then it should work.
Yes, and the comments here should provide all the points to cover:
unfortunately not of much use
I think this method only works for moving primary partitions.
From my experience, logical partition does not behave the same way as primary.
Just found this:
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1457733
It requires multiple steps from terminal commands.
I am not so sure if this can be handled by beginners.
Good point:
Yes, I think that is the general consensus of the thread. Along with that the Family involved may be involved in this thread. Open honesty is always the best policy.
Thank you so much guys for researching and helping me. The last thing I want to know is that if I resize my current partition of Zorin OS from 1000 GB to 500 GB, and install Ubuntu or any other OS in the remaining space, will the GRUB of Ubuntu have any conflict with Zorin's GRUB
Be aware that the Ubuntu Grub will be presented- with Ubuntu Grub Theme, not Zorin Grub theme.
So guys if I install ubuntu in another partition, what should I keep the bootloader location as, should it be the partition or keep it in the hard disk
The bootloader can remain the same.
should the bootloader be in ubuntu partition or the zorin os partition or the entire hard disk, to prevent conflict with zorin os bootloader.
It's user choice, really. You can create a separate /boot partition just for boot. Grub - bootloader on EFI will always go in the EFI partition.
if i create a new boot partition, then :- 1) what should the minimum size of it be, 2) if i install in that seperate /boot partition, will it create a conflict with the zorin os grub.
Is this the same computer that was mentioned previously that there was some issue that your dad did not want these changes?
its the same, my dad lets me use this pc, he did not allow me to do anything suspicious, but i once removed windows, installed ubuntu, then zorin os, and once again ubuntu, all without him knowing. so it is a bit risky, but i am ready to take it, if it goes smoothly.
I certainly understand your point of view. However, I must ask you to understand the point of view of ZorinGroup and the Forum as a whole.
If your father is upset about his possessions being altered- and if he comes here and confronts us for aiding and abetting - it can be quite a show...
Sometimes a person may be far more open to exploring possibilities than you may think. And sometimes, they may not be. The only way to know is to honestly be upfront. Give a good reason why another method may be better. And if they are not, regardless of how we may personally feel about it, we must respect their investments and their property, even if we make a note to ourselves to do things differently with our own investments. Or as a motive to acquire our own.
Others may disagree with me on this. But for me; I must stand by my ethics and what I believe is Right. My gut keeps clenching as I read these posts. It's not sitting with me right, at all.
I have not told any of these before, so i am not getting the courage to speak up.
