I have been experimenting with "Wine/Bottles" with little success, so I am slowly thinking of having a virtual Windows10 inside of Zorin? That way, I can run the few apps I occasionally need without poking around. Has anyone else done this, and what about protection of the unsupported Win10 after October?
I haven't tried Windows 10 as a VM but I had a 32-bit version of 7 as a VM and successfully upgraded the VM to Windows 8.1 Pro during the time I was working from home in order to access workplace secure website. First you should run a .vbs script created in Notepad to establish the C.o.A. licence key. In terms of Software I recommend virt-manager over Virtual Box every time.
Hi,
I usually do this via VirtualBox and it usually works well for your purpose.
About your concern about Windows 10 not receiving support from Microsoft, one option is to use Windows 11 without activating it. I "guess" (disclaimer: you should double check the current legal terms for this, I'm not sure about it.) you can use Windows 11 for free without activating it and the only limitations are not being able to personalize the look and feel of it and the activation notice remains at the bottom right corner of the screen all the time. You also always have the option to buy Windows 11.
Microsoft allows you to download an ISO file of Windows 11 and you can use this ISO to create a VM via VirtualBox.
Feel free to ask any follow-up questions, I would be glad to help.
I have had Zorin VM running inside Windows10 for a period. Now it's reverse of that. Have to probably increase my RAM. I also have the option to use Windows10 LTSC, which has support for another 10 years. It is a cut down bare bones commercial version, but have to research being able to access a licence? I'm thinking a total clean install on my laptop with Zorin and VM LTSC?
I wasn't able to completely understand your point. Please explain what the problem is so we can find a way to help you.
If you are concerned about security, that should not be an issue. All you need to do once you have created an image is to back it up to an external drive. In fact your best solution would be to install virt-manager, far superior to VB, and once you have all the necessary software installed create a full image of your hard drive using rescuezilla.
I am still running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit that I put in my hotswap bay and still get security updates.
I did receive an idiotic optional update about the symbol for Russian ruble symbol but when you visit MS site for more details it creates other issues. You should also backup your /home folder regularly, separate to any image you create so your essential data remains up to date.
I've been using Win10 in VirtualBox for over a year now to run MS Office and other software. I'm not in the least bit concerned about security updates because I don't let that VM connect to the internet.
After setting up the Win10 VM, I got all the software that I need installed, ran the updates for the software and Windows, and then permanently disconnected it from the internet. Now, I can run Win10 for the next 10 years if I want without any issues.
I use shared folders to access files - including occasional install files for new programs. That enables me to install what I need and access/edit my files without ever connecting to the www.
