Wacom stylus no longer works after Zorin 18 upgrade

I upgraded to Zorin 18 yesterday and experienced lots of software incompatibility issues and new glitches within those that still worked.

The most pressing problem is that my pen stylus no longer works. Initially I thought it was a problem with Krita, so I reinstalled it. But then I realised that although the stylus can move the cursor around when on the desktop, I can't use it to interact with anything.

I had absolutely no problems with this beforehand but now it has derailed my project - which is frustrating to say the least.

Has anyone else experienced this or could suggest a way to fix the problem?

Welcome to the Forum!

Does Your System run in Wayland of X11? You can check that with the Terminal Command echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

When Your Zorin 18 is up-to-date now, there should be Kernel 6.17 installed and active. Could You check that with the Command uname -r please? If it shows Kernel 6.17, You could try it with switching to the older Kernel 6.14 and see if it behaves better. To switch, choose on the GRUB Menu ''Advanced Options'' and choose the Option with the 6.14 Kernel.

Thanks for your quick Ponce-De-Leon!

I followed your instructions and I'm using Wayland and the Kernal appears to be '6.17.00-14-generic' - so I'll try to switch back and let you know if it works...

Unfortunately this has not amended the problem.

I have tried rolling back to two of the previous kernels using the GRUB menu, but the problem persists.

I have noted that I can temporarily use the pen tablet before it stops working. For example I can scribble a wavy line in Krita, but the next stroke, the cursor vanishes and I can no longer interact with it.

I then open the stylus settings, and the pen reactivates, allowing me to make marks on the testing pad. It initially functions again for the first stroke within Krita, but thereafter, the cursor disappears once more and cannot be interacted with.

Is there anything else I can do? :folded_hands:

so, it doesn't work right only in LKrita? Did You checked different Programs to see if it behaves the same?

What is with that:

Is Krita installed as Flatpak or .deb Version?

Originally I had Krita installed as Flatpak, but when I first discovered the pen tablet problems I uninstalled it then installed the .deb version. But the problem doesn't appear to be Krita because the cursor also vanishes if I try using the pen with my desktop. It instantly reappears if I start using my mouse. It's a really strange issue.

Could it be something to do with me having two monitors? I've heard that this has been a problem in the past.

When You go to Software & Updates and take a Look at the ''Additional Drivers'' Tab are there any Drivers offered?

Krita is also available as AppImage:

Can You pelase try it with this?

How are the Monitors set up? And there is still this:

Hi Ponce-De-Leon, thanks for continuing to help me.

I ran the command and it stated that I am 'Wayland'.

I have two monitors though they are set up back-to-front to make it work correctly:

I'm wondering if it is being grumpy that my primary monitor is #2?

When I told the pen to work on exclusively on monitor #1, it seemed to fix the problem, but I haven't thoroughly tested it.

I've been continuing to test the pen on monitor #1 and the problem with the cursor disappearing in Krita seems to be fixed, however, there's many other problems that have appeared only after the Zorin upgrade.

For example the cursor still disappears if I'm using my pen with my web browser - yet it is still interactive!

There are other problems that have appeared within Krita - such as major slowdown (for example, when zooming in and out, or spinning an image). I'll try installing the AppImage version to see if that helps.

Other programmes are crashing as well. I was checking Figma and it crashed multiple times. I've had to install an alternative to the screen recording software that I was previously using because that software simply no longer worked.

Also, when working in the Unity editor window, the colours are so washed out that it almost looks grey-scale.

I could be worth a Try to switch to X11/Xorg and see if it behaves better. To switch, go to the Login Screen. Click on Your Profile so that the Password Field appears. When it is appeared, You should see in the bottom right Corner a Gear Icon. Click on it and choose the Option ''Zorin Desktop on Xorg'' and then log in.

You could switch the Connections from the Monitors on Your Machine. I had to do this, too with my new Dual-Monitor Setup. So, I had Monitor 1 properly as the primary Monitor. But to say that: I don't use the ''Join'' Mode. I use ''Mirror''.

I've swapped the monitor cables and that seems to have properly fixed the issue around my stylus pen cursor disappearing :+1:

This unfortunately didn't make any difference and there is still significant performance issues. I will install the Applimage version of Krita today to see if that makes if difference, however, I feel somewhat sceptical since my other software has also become glitchy.

Thank you for your continued support @Ponce-De-Leon

Just a quick update to say that I installed Krita Applimage - and saw a big improvement to the problems I've mentioned above. The Krita team appear to have released an updated version as recently as last week so maybe that ironed out some problems. However, after using it for a short while yesterday, it crashed to my desktop. So I've had to reduce the time between backup autosaves because I feel that this could become a regular occurrence.

At this point, I'm not sure if my problems are Zorin 18 or if the individual software developers need to patch up their programmes to acknowledge Zorin's upgrade? One thing is certain is that these issues only appeared after the upgrade, which has been mightily disappointing when initially I was so excited.

When the AppImage works for now the better Way, can You try again with the older 6.14 Kernel how it runs?
