What games do you play on Linux?

On Linux I have experienced many stupid shooting games, controlled by buttons. Many and varied games

I'm currently playing the latest 2024 release, Star Trek Resurgence!

IMO, this is the best Star Trek game that has ever been made, and that is speaking with 7.6-hours worth of gameplay so far. This game has the mix of the RPG element where you make dialog choices, which can have consequences. (Which is not foreign to Star Trek games of the passed at all)

One of the things this game does really well, is the hands on QT elements, where you have to solve mini puzzles, to act as sequences, in order to get something done, on console control units within the game, adding a bit of difficulty, but with great reward, when you complete the console based QT tasks.

The voice acting in the game is superb, and you will recognize some familiar faces in Star Trek history, within this very game, that will be sure to put a smile on your face. And while the full motion of the characters movements are sometimes jank, the mannerisms in the faces, is perfection.

Since you play as the crews replacement first officer, as well as the ability to delegate actions as for your crew, you are sometimes asked to make hard choices. And with every choice, is a consequence of that choice, so you want to make your choices wisely in the game.

In this game, you also get to pilot a shuttle craft, I had no idea they were so slow, but you will get to your points of interest eventually, and face challenges in order to get there, as well.

There are also missions you get to do on foot, where you get to use not only a phaser in self defense, but also a tricorder, to discover hidden objects for control mechanisms, and to scan the composition of a material, as well as a few other things, in order to complete your mission.

This game seems to provide an overall balance, that is usually not seen in past Star Trek games. In my experience, Star Trek games are usually created to provide only 1-type of gameplay, and no other, securing its position as a 1-trick pony.

But this game, seems to provide all the things one would want to do, in a Star Trek universe. It does a really good job, of making you feel like you are living in a Star Trek universe, that I sometimes forget, that I am actually living in a dystopian universe in a real life, while I am playing the game!

Many of times, we've heard Star Trek terminology for systems onboard a starship, for which we never got to see, both in the shows, and the movies. Another thing this game does well, is letting us see, and interact with such systems. For example, a re-calibration of the Structural Integrity Field was needed. (SIF for short)

It takes what we know and love, from the shows, and movies, and puts us in the front seat, to enjoy all that we love, and more. And that IMO, is something that previous Star Trek games, never really did that well, as compared to this one.

Now, thats not to say that this game is perfect by any means. Janky movements of the characters in cinematic sequences, are not the only issue in the game. While scanning with the tricorder, brings us a more realistic Star Trek experience, it also can add frustration on what you need to specifically scan, and which modes you need to scan in.

The game doesn't always make this obvious, it assumes that I have completed the basics in Starfleet Academy, and that I know every rivet of the standard issue tricorder, and how to use it. Since I am not an Starfleet Academy graduate in real life, it would have been nice if the game, gave better tutorials, or at least tips, on how to maximize the use of the tricorder, to complete my goal.

Additionally, the battles that you have using your phaser, you can't even see where the enemy is, when you are behind cover. So you have to pop your head up, takes a second to aim, before you can fire, which the enemy, who knows exactly where you are, can hit you first, before you get off a shot.

There were moments, where I just started firing all over in the general area, just in hopes I hit my target. But there were other times, in which I did hit my target first try, so it just depends. And in moments where I felt the game was getting too difficult, and I was just going to keep failing, I managed to (quicker then I expected) win the phaser battle, so I could continue.

No Star Trek game is perfect, they have all had their pluses and minuses. But no Star Trek game I've ever played in the past, did such a good job, of bringing you into the Star Trek universe, as Star Trek Resurgence has. The developers really put in a labor of love with this one, and it shows!

So far, with my 7.6-hours of gameplay, (for which I am about to play much more after I post this) I can 100% recommend this game. If you are a real Star Trek fan, then you owe it to yourself to play this game. And currently they are running a Steam sale, where you can get this 2024 game for only 12-14 dollars!

I play basically any game I want nowadays on linux, and yes, that even includes the ones with anti cheat in them. It's come a loooooong way since, hell, even 5 years ago.

Anytime anyone asks me if I miss playing my games, I just have to remind them hey, it's actually fine, I play basically everything I used to play and then some. Sure, there's once in a blue moon where something won't be playable, but that's so rare that I don't even think about it before I buy a game I want to play.

I might pester you on this... I never had any luck with New World due to anti-cheat software and lack of GnuLinux support.

Is that an MMO? Or am I thinking of the wrong game.

I would say it is not - opinions vary (chuckle).
I do not know much about it - I never played it...

I am not sure if anyone ever played Cannon Fodder in the 90's, if yes i would highly recommand the game TEAM Six - Armored Troops on steam. Just tested how it runs on linux and it runs great out of the box.

I don't play many games anymore but I'm very fond of franchises like Caesar or Civilization. I prefer slow-paced games where I can take my time to think. Unfortunately, those are the games that take up a lot of time in the blink of an eye!

EA App installed through Lutris. Proton enabled and installed Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered. Quality is amazing (look at the reflections on the street)

@StarTreker, On epic store the game is a little bit cheaper now (€11,19)

Sins of a Solar Empire 2. A pearl of pearls!

any chess players here that could suggest a 3D chess app for linux ?
i've searced and looked at Dreamchess , but not what i'm looking for ...
all the other apps i see is 2D , what i'm looking for is a board i can rotate any which way.
fanx !

This is the important distinction... Not many offer this. GLChess does to some degree.

thanks , i'll look into it

You probably didn't intend for that to be funny reply. But he asked for a board that could be rotated and you gave an answer about degrees. Maybe just my technical background but I think that is funny.

I did not... but I am happy with the outcome.

In case anyone cares for 40k stuff, Darktide runs great and requires basically no tinkering. I can't say I love it as much as Vermintide 2, but I do absolutely LOVE the soundtrack in it. At the very least, I would look that up if you want something to match the tone of that setting.
