My Windows method of transferring photos from the iPhone to the computer (WinX MediaTrans) doesn't seem to work with Wine and I can't find any way of transferring my photos. I'd prefer a USB cable method if possible and also one that would convert HEIC files to jpg.
Zorin Connect is, I think based on KDEConnect and from what I've read that will allow you to mount the iPhone. Worth a try, anyway..
I'm not sure about installing the phone app though. I sincerely doubt it's on the Appstore.
If zorin connect doesn't work you can try Localsend
https://localsend.org/fr
In terms of using apps I would remove Zorin Connect from Zorin and install KDE Connect and the KDE Connect app from the app store but do read the reviews underneath:
If it does not work for you I would follow @Nourpon 's suggestion.
Just to add if you have GUFW (firewall) in use then you need to add the preset rule for KDE Connect to be allowed through the firewall.
Hello Shoshiplatypus,
For me I just use Gnome Files. When I plug my iphone, it mount the "Documents on Iphone" directory automatically.
Click on it, there you can see all your apps.
Then, click on the Gnome Files location bar.
On Zorin 18, you can edit it directly.
On Zorin 17 and before, you need to press ctrl + L in order to edit it.
Remove the ":3/" from the end of the path and press enter.
This will then show you all the directories from your iphone.
Go to the "DCIM" directory and from there you can see all your photos, check the directory with the highest number for the most recent photos. Then just drag and drop the photo to a directory on your computer with Gnome Files.
Just be careful as it will show all your photos, even the one that are in the "Recently deleted" folder on the Iphone. This is because IOS don't really move these photos, it sort of tag them. So I usually delete my recently deleted photos before I start any copy.
Alternatively, the "Shotwell" and "gthumb" can deal with photo transfers.
You can find here some suggestions on how to convert HEIC files: https://askubuntu.com/questions/958355/any-app-on-ubuntu-to-open-and-or-convert-heif-pictures-heic-high-efficiency-i
You could also change your iphone Camera setting to store photos in JPG. Go to settings --> Camera --> Formats --> Change from "High Efficiency" to "Most Compatible"
I hope this helps.
Also, when I plug my iphone, I sometimes get a photo icon called "iphone" that get mounted to Gnome files. When you click on it, you can see your photos in JPG format and then just and drag them to your computer. This would be the easiest method but sadly it doesn't work all the time for me, either this folder doesn't mount or I get errors when trying to access my photos.
My iphone photos were in icloud so when I wanted to cut the ties with Apple I subscribed to ente photos which is open source and encrypted and came recommended by several people I trust. I now have all my photos on ente which I can access on Zorin through vivaldi browser, and on my graphene phone (which replaced my ancient iphone5 last year) through ente app or browser, and also downloaded a copy to my data SSD. I guess it all depends how you prefer to store and access your photos.
I do more-or-less the same think. I use pCloud for cloud storage. The phone app automatically uploads photos to that.
pCloud has an desktop app and mounts as a network drive.
Easy to access all images.
Thank you! I have installed LocalSend on both iPhone and Zorin and it works a treat! I was wondering about converting the HEIC files to jpg and have discovered that you can open HEIC files in GIMP and save them as jpg. This works beautifully. I'm now learning the layout of GIMP and discovering it will do pretty much everything I need (I've been using ancient Serif PhotoPlus on Windows and love it - prefer it to Photoshop). Many years ago I used GIMP on Windows for a while and it was fine - it has now definitely improved since those days. So it all looks as if I will be able to manage my photos very well on Linux, just with different software. I think LocalSend is going to be useful for other things too, so many thanks for the advice.
Thank you! I shall try this as well. I've got LocalSend up and running for now and that seems to work fine, and GIMP will convert the HEIC files to jpg - I always edit all my photos anyway so it's no extra step. Your solution does look very simple, though. I shall experiment with the different methods and see which works best.
I've just spotted your instructions on how to alter the camera settings on the iPhone. I had no idea you could do this! I've now set it to Most Compatible. I don't store a lot of photos on the phone and it has pretty large capacity anyway, so the larger file size won't matter much. Great advice - thank you.
I plugged in my phone and found all the photos in "Files." I was able to drag and drop them into "Pictures." This works!! Thanks so much. Really simple. If it doesn't work at any time, I can always go back to LocalSend which is installed on both the phone and the Linux laptop.
