When gaming or using it for regular work both Xorg and Wayland freeze

So for some reason both Xorg and Wayland randomly freeze for a few seconds for up to a minute and other rare times everything freezes (with exception my mouse for some reason but unable to interact anything with it) which forces me to shut down the machine. Now before you ask if the keyboard does not respond on those rare times.

Is there a way to fix this without doing file editing? If I have to do a few simple commands then I am find with it.

Let me ask some Questions for more Informations:

  • Can You post Your Hardware Specs please? If You have a Nvidia Card, post the Driver Version, too.
  • Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled?
  • If Windows is still installed: Is Fast Start-Up in Windows disabled?
  • Is this a fresh Installation or do You use Zorin for a While now?
  • Is this a new Issue what came up or a permanent one?
  • If You should use Steam for Gaming: Is it installed as Flatpak or .deb Package?
  • Can You specifiy in which Programs that happens?

AMD Ryzen 9 9900X 12-Core Processor
AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT
Kingston DDR5 32 GB 6600 MT/s
Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus

Secure Boot off

Windows is installed on the second NVMe

I've had Zorin OS 18,1 for over 2 months

This issue existed on a different post but that got resolved

For gaming: I use Steam flathub, Heroic Launcher flathub, Sober flathub and X Minecraft Launcher flathub.

All programs. None are safe from this issue. Even on desktop doing nothing other than moving around my mouse and pressing the Windows key here and there.

Take a look at this

Ok I did that, now what?

now nothing, when a functional linux-firmware will be push I will inform the forum to unhold and you will install it

FYI. Nourpon solution is to roll-back and hold that previous firmware, until a new better version is released. Nourpon has offered to notify the forum when that happens. So just have to wait for that.

Are you still having problems after following the Tutorial steps ?

With Your Hardware, maybe a newer Kernel could be a good Idea. Also, you could replace the Flatpak Versions with .deb Versions to check if it makes a Difference.

But when You now have made the Firmware Change that @Nourpon suggests, You should check first if that helps.

For sure, I'm impacted by this regression, it touch me directly and either Canonical gave me a patched linux-firmware for test (which didn't solve the problem), I would prefer to be up do date

It's a few years old but good enough honestly.

For those who want you can read my report and some will understand what is the regression for amd_gpu

To use a newer Kernel was only a Suggestion. You don't have to do that. When You now have changed the Firmware Package report back if it helps or not.

First off, I didn't understand that it was a suggestion but more of a solution.
Second off, I am now confused. Do I change something? Do I keep it? Will I have shrodinger's computer? xD

For info using a newer kernel for this regression will doing nothing, because it will just port the regression to the newer kernel

it's a solution for now
No, just stay like this with a functional linux-firmware, I will inform people when it would be OK

You mean with the Firmware Package? Yes, You have changed something. With @Nourpon's Way, You have installed an older Firmware Package Version and blocked the newer Version because the new one has an Issue. That is not bad to do it.

And as @Nourpon now wrote to me, a newer Kernel wouldn't help. So, You can ignore that.

Alright so, the freeze began again today. First time was when I was looking through screenshots to learn SQL, second time I was on LibreWolf browser studying french and using Sober on the side for when I needed a bit of a break.

In both cases today, although it didnt fully freeze (because I could press the WIndows key and the Zorin Menu would pop up and allow me to guide my mouse there), it still would not let me open or close any windows or even Alt Tab to switch windows. Any application at the Taskbar would interact and I was stuck like this for the first one about... 5 minutes. As for the second one, about a minute.

Due note, I am using Xorg at this moment in time. But at least from my experience so far, I don't think there would be that much of a difference if I changed to Wayland.

Hello,
could you give me the output of

apt-cache policy linux-firmware

Sudo or nah?

just the command without sudo
