WiFi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, Mobile Tethering, Audio Input & Output all suddenly not working

Introduction

As the title suggests, I turned on my PC this morning to find that my PC's WiFi, Ethernet, Bluetooth and audio input and output all stopped working out of the blue.

Description

I had already used my PC earlier this morning before switching it off to run some errands, before turning it back on again only to find it in the state it is currently in.

I had done nothing out of the ordinary prior to this, besides ignoring a software update. I have ignored previous software updates with no such consequences and now I am left with no way to update without Internet.

Curiously, my audio input and output have also stopped working, as I am not able to record audio using my USB microphone, or output audio using my headphones or my TV (my HDMI video output is otherwise unaffected).

Additionally, my RFID keyboard and mouse are unaffected, as well as my PC's ability to read and write to external devices via USB, such as flash drives or my phone.

Strangely, Zorin recognised the ethernet connection when it was connected to the router, but couldn't establish a connection to the Internet. I have tried to connect to WiFi via tethering with my phone, yet this has also failed.

Another observation I have made is that the GUI animations are also broken. Instead of smooth transitions between menus and windows, they all appear instantly with no animation.

Does anyone know what's going on and how I could fix this?

Previously attempted fixes

I have tried to resolve the ethernet issue using the sudo lshw -C network command to no avail.

Hardware

  • Hardware Model: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-7B84
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X × 16
  • WiFi Dongle: BrosTrend AC650 AC5
  • Bluetooth Dongle: TP-Link UB500
(Both dongles are Linux compatible and have worked without issue up until this point)

hello and welcome,
You can try to boot to older kernel

  • Restart the PC and press Escape during boot to access the GRUB menu (may also be accessed with Shift)
  • Select "Advanced options for Zorin OS"
  • Here, you can see the available kernels to boot into. Choose the older one (without recovery option)

Fixed! Thank you so much!

Follow up question: why did this happen in the first place?

My pleasure...
Sometimes when kernel is updated some users have hardware problems.
If it work now you need to follow this guide to stay with your working kernel
