Window dragging is off Zorin 18.1 (Video)

Hello,

I've got a problem in Zorin core 18.1 with some windows, when dragged.

  • When i click on a window title and drag it, the position of the window jumps to a default state on the right corner and the mouse cursor is off

Video:

When I disable wayland,going to x11, it doesn't appear.
I also disabled some Gnome enhancements but didn't work.

It's not on every window but here and there.
Someone else having this problem?

You just found the "pleasure" of unstable and buggy Wayland, for sure X11 should be your better option.
So stay in X11 :wink:

Ah well, I thought maybe after those years it's been sorted out.
Bummer. I'm not that familiar with window managers or engines, wouldn't there be some issues going forward when I switch to x11? Zorin 18.1 was with wayland in mind as far as I know. Thanks for the input.

Welcome to the Forum!

Is the Program a Flatpak or a .deb Package? Also: I see at the Top the Window Tiling Function when moving. You could try it with disabling it and see if it behaves differently then.

It's a flatpak install from Zorin Software Store. I disabled that function before but can't find the path to that setting. Could you lead me there please?

Open Zorin Appearance and there on the Window Tab.

Tried that but doesn't make a difference unfortunately.

I went to the Joplin website and downloaded the AppImage file.
Though I didn't want to start the AppImage manually every time, I found the App "Gear Lever" in Zorin App Store. It seems to integrate AppImage files into my menu.

That fixed the drag problem for a short period. But it reappeared.

What I noticed:

  • when I go fullscreen with Joplin and then drag it around, minimize the window to taskbar, it's fine.
  • But when i close the window and open it again from the taskbar icon, it jiggles around again until it's been in fullscreen and then gets dragged fine (Video2).

Someone got an idea what the cause may be?

Now another question: Is there any downside in integrating that AppImage into my system with Gear Lever that I'm not seeing (maybe in the future?)

I don't see any problem to be on X11, but only benefits.
I'm on it till my first Zorin install and I will not change for bugged DE

Yes, Gear Lever create Entries so an AppImage can start like a normal Program.

Because of Your new posted Video: I saw that You clicked on the little Indicator Icon on the right side to open it. Does it behave like this only when You open it from there?

Yes indeed it does.

  • starting program > window appears blank > goes minimized into tray
  • opening window from tray > snaps from last position to corner
  • maximizing window > drag works again

But I found another strange behavior:

  • closing window > opening from system tray icon > minimize > open from taskbar > cramped

(See in Video3)

So i can minimize into taskbar and window appears normal. But closing window and opening from tray icon, gets problems.

Hmm ... looks for me like it is related to the Tray Icon. An Option would be to not use the Tray Icon. Or switching to Xorg when You don't have the Issue. Also contacting the Joplin Project and explain the Issue could bringing Advice, too. Or maybe they bring a Patch when it is a Problem from the Program.

The problem is more than Wayland is full of bugs in 24.04, and so with your Debian and Gnome 50 wayland is more mature :wink:

Yeah I'm on Xorg now. But good idea to send that bug to Joplin team. Well, that's my workaround then. Just not using systray icon or using x11 session.

If anyone got another solution, just let me know.

Debian 13 stable uses Gnome 48. Gnome 50 is only in Debian Sid. I tried once the Transition from stable to sid, yes. But the Result wasn't running so well. So, when I use Debian, I use the stable Branch.

My bad, of course Debian don't use the latest Gnome, they are not stupid :smiley:

If you don't want to switch to Xorg altogether, you could also modify Joplin's startup command with the app alacarte and try adding the "ozone platform" flag in a Wayland session
--ozone-platform=x11

I also read for other issues with Joplin that it helped to set wayland there.

--ozone-platform=wayland

If you want to test both versions, remove the joplin .desktop file after the first test from ~/.local/share/applications and logout and login again, because it doesn't work to edit the desktop file multiple times with alacarte. Or you edit Joplin's .desktop file (Exec-line) for your second test.

Edit: I tested it but it seems not to work.

Drag and drop :innocent: for instance a files from Nautilus to another window / app - such as cinnamon or Plasma allow to do. Also security concerns ?
But i mostly use X11 on Zorin or Mint ... Our Kamvas drawing tablet doesn't work that fine on Wayland too ...

I switch often on Wayland with 18.1, i don't have bug ...
Yet, i have the worst situation for Linux user ; Hybrid gpu Intel / Nvidia ! :grin:
