Zorin 17.2 feedback

Hi all,

Today i installed Zorin OS 17.2 on my wifes older notebook. I am very impressed with the zorin os 17.1. The wifi stick i used back in 2021 is working out of the box now. 3 years ago i had to use this in order to get it to work.

Keep up the good work, for new users who comes from Windows i do advise Zorin (dua the appearance choices). I am going to play with it now to see how it performs.

Just wanted to say thanks!

I am so happy that you gave Zorin a chance again. As you can see, Zorin has improved quite a bit since you last saw her. I hope that you continue to have a positive experience with it, as you have right now. I am currently waiting for the next release next year, for OS 18, then I will be upgrading to that one, since OS 16 will officially drop support next year.

Please continue to make reports, on your experience with OS 17.1, as you go. Get us a screenfetch, so we can see the available resources to the systems, so we have something to go by, when you tell us how well the machine is running OS 17.1.

I was also pleasantly surprised to discover Zorin Os and, even after trying other distributions, it was the system that won me over. Its simplicity, active community, documentation, Forum support, library of incredible applications, etc.
Welcome!

Sure, here it is

The names Davina is my first daughter and the second name Isabella is my second daughter. She is 6 months old now.

Well i already was impressed with Zorin 16 haha. When i ditched windows for zorin i was blown away by all the options you had in appearances (back in 2021). The magic lamp and wobbly window is also cool and i took those 2 .deb files from zorin to install those on Pop! OS 22.04 (my machine).

Translation should be a bit better, because sometimes i see english is some stuff like this one, this also was present in Zorin 16

As for how it works, the laptop is already running much faster then when windows 8/10 and 11 was installed LOL!

My older Acer Laptop (the one i posted about in 2021/2022) will get Zorin OS 17.1 too.

Interesting that on your Screefetch Picture stands: ''DE: Gnome 41.7''

Seems a issue with screenfetch, neofetch shows the correct version.

With a resolution of 1600 * 900, I assume the laptop is using maybe a 15" to 16" screen? I see the gnome version is 41.7. Which I am guessing is a fairly recent gnome? I see, you are running the light theme on it, no Darth Vader allowed there lol.

It looks like you got 2 hard drives in that thing, one 1TB, and the other 2TB. I also got 2 drives in mine, and they are both 1TB NVME's. Looks like the machine is rocking an I7 8-core CPU at 3.2GHZ, which is more then enough speed for a general purpose usage, should be fast.

And it looks like the machine has 2GB of RAM, if I translated that properly. Do you have the RAM maxed out, or can the machine be upgraded with more? Regardless, you chose the right OS for that machine, IMO.

I am glad that you were impressed with OS 16, cause its awesome. I too appreciate the appearance options, they are stellar, and I too love the wobbly windows, as well as my Burn My Windows extension, for added window animation deliciousness.

I see the issue you are talking about, and to be honest, I didn't expect that. I assumed, that when you chose a language option, that everything was in that language, like how everything is in English for me. I think thats an issue you should bring up with the Zorin team, see if they can fix that for you.

I am so happy to hear, that its running much faster on Zorin OS. Its just another option to give Microsoft a good kick in the pants, cause we don't need it, especially after what they have most recently done with Windows 11, where they now take screenshots of your screen at regular intervals, and you can't disable it!

That is music to my ears buddy, I am team Zorin for life. Time for the 2021/2022 notebook to get a good solid Zorin refresh, as it will bring new life into that machine. YAY!

Oh I see, issue with Screenfetch, thats why I have both Screenfetch and Neofetch, just incase. Gnome 43.9. Oh...And... I see that Neofetch is also reporting your discreet GPU properly too, I see its got an AMD ATI Radeon HD 7500/7600 in that bad boy, auda make them HD graphics on screen pop.

Correct!, well this laptop will be for my daughters so they might change it when they are getting older.

Actually it has 1 SSD, I plugged a 2TB external drive behind it + i made a mount point for a .iso file for testing purpose. I tried to get a game to work (teletubbies from the year 1998) and i got it to work!. The laptop is 12-13 years old but everything is running super fast. Is this because of wayland ?

Not check, when i opened it i never looked at it. The laptop is also never cleaned, running great after all these years lol.

I was, but compared to 17.1 it runs much faster for some reason. This laptop almost runs as smooth as my brand new one. (except for gaming lol)

Well 2 machines will run Zorin OS 17.1, the HP unit and the Acer unit. I have yet to install it on my older gaming notebook Acer Predator G9-793-71SJ, gaved that notebook to my wife 1 and half year ago because i bought the MSI notebook.

My wife did not get used to linux back in 2021-2022, she asked me to put windows back so i did. But i warned her alot lately what microsoft is doing, the spyware, the forced reboots after update and so on. My wife said .... yeah yeah will see. Till last week Microsoft updated in the background, she said to me wtf i said don´t update just shut down the system. Microsoft decided to do the updates and reboot. LOL, she said ok maybe i should indeed switch to something else, i don´t like this and i am worried about my privacy. I ask her what she is doing with the laptop, playing a few older games and some internet stuff. I know i can get those games to work so....bye bye windows

A few days ago i was doing some file transfers from this hp notebook to the external drive, i did not get any warnings about windows update running updates in the background or anything. During file transfer the systems just rebooted and saw the message the system is updating.....really ? during file transfer ? Luckely i did not lose files.

The most funny thing is, the teletubbies game has some quicktime videos in the game. Windows 10/11 could not play them by default....in Zorin OS it does.

In terms of translation, this is an issue for all GNU/Linux Operating Systems and the global GNU/Linux volunteer trabslation project is now dead. Similarly this will also apply to some applications. The one exception being LibreOffice which has more languages supported than MS Office. Zorin did put a call out for volunteers awhile back to assist with translation.

Well, maybe copilot can translate it for us  :stuck_out_tongue:

Noooooooo! :scream:

File transfer speed from one SSD to another is also much better handled in Linux then in Windows. I get speeds 400+mb speed dropping down of course to 200+

What i also like at Linux, when you add a external drive you can mount/unmount it. If you unmount it without plugging the cable you can easely mount it again by pressing the mount icon. In windows when you unmount it itś unmounted and you must plug the cable out and re-insert them LOL.

I also noticed the sounds/volume are 10x better, this HP laptop came with Windows 8 and the realtek drivers where not that great. When i used the volume up to 100% i could only hear like 40%. In Linux when i set it to 100% the volume is 100%. This notebook was never that loud as i have right now.

So far i am very pleased!.

Seems i got the Zorin OS 17.2 update yesterday (or today).

Installing Zorin OS 17.x on the Acer Machine. Trying the nvme drive, last time i installed Pop! OS on it it refused to boot from it. Wonder if Zorin will boot from the nvme drive.

Edit: Got the same issue in the past "No bootable device found" on the nvme drive, did a google search and it's and acer issue which can be fixed following some steps and enable the BOOTx64.efi in the bios.

Edit 2: I booted the machine, i can´t say it's running faster then the other notebook which is +/- 12 years old. I have no issue what is going on, it's a bit slow. Doing some research now.

Driver not installed ?, strange because i checked it and it does show up. But when i click on the nvidia settings i miss alot of info. Going to test nouveau driver and reinstall the nvidia.

You could try it with the nvidia-smi Command in the Terminal.

neofetch is like , old , not maintained anymore i think
fastfetch is the new kid on the block lol

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:zhangsongcui3371/fastfetch
sudo apt update
sudo apt install fastfetch

EDIT:
nvidia driver fully wiped, running the nouveau driver and now zorin runs much faster. I will try to reinstall nvidia again and check what's happening.

Fixed the issue, but not thanks to zorin sadly. I had to use Pop! OS kernel + their latest nvidia driver. :astonished:. I also switched from wayland to x11.

So far it is running great now.

With a Nvidia Card this is the better Choice now. If You would use Gnome 46.1 or Plasma 6.1 and the fitting Nvidia Driver the Wayland Experience should be better because of Explicit Sync but outside of this is Xorg with Nvidia a better Choice.

Well i did switch to x11, purged the nvidia driver completely. Rebooted to make sure it was using the nouveau driver. Reinstalled the 550 driver from zorin and it was lagging alot like it did in Wayland. I also tried the 545 driver, same results.

That’s why i tried the kernel and nvidia driver from Pop! OS (repo) So far it is butter smooth now. It also installed the HiDPI and LoDPI deamon.
