This did not help
I was mistaken my version is 17.3 not 18
@Storm
Okay, it could be the config files in your home directory that is corrupted, try make a new user.
XXXXX = username
Then try login into the new account.
adduser XXXXX
usermod -aG sudo XXXXX
su - XXXXX
sudo reboot
Then pick the new user at the login screen.
If that doesn't work I'm out of ideas.
Okay, it shouldn't have any effect what we are doing here.
It did not work
Still black login screen or Gnomes Screen of death?
If anyone has any suggestion to try next, please chip in.
Yes but weirdly during the gnome screen of death i can still use the start up programs and even launch games via steam
Login loop issue can be caused by any number of issues. I covered the login loop issue in both Unofficial Manuals for Zorin 17 and 18.
page 278 onwards
All 3 methods did not work but thanks
Sorry to hear. I know some stuff here is a repeat of some of the stuff I put in the manual, but see if the .cache is the issue (I searched under Ubuntu 22.04 as that is what Zorin 17 is based on:
Try to fix broken packages(if any)
sudo apt install -f
Do a reboot and test.
If the above doesn't work then try installing a different DE, see if that works or not. If it works then it can be confirmed that the problem is with gnome and it's recent updates.
Try installing Zorin OS lite desktop (which uses Xfce DE):
sudo apt install zorin-os-lite-desktop
During installation it might ask you to choose a Display Manager, I suggest to choose lightdm for the time being.
Reboot and on the login screen choose Zorin Lite and login with your username.
That worked I can login with zorin light
@Storm gives You this:
I would suggest to try this:
sudo apt reinstall gdm3
gdm3 is the Login Screen and the Command reinstalls it.
Did not work
Have you set lightdm as default when you have installed xfce4? Then you would need a further command to set gdm3 as default.
lightdm did not work either so I switched back to gdm3
Hmm ... try sudo apt --fix-broken install
Did not work
@Amnesius, please take a moment to describe what you see and what the effects of actions are.
"It didn't work" is vague enough to cover everything from crashes, errors, system failures to a mild and pleasently unexpected result.
It is one sentence that is often used that brings troubleshooting to a stand still.
This part is your half of the effort in the thread.
Non of the proposed solutions made any difference exept installing Zorin Light if start a Zorin Light session it works
