Hello! I just switched over to zorin os yesterday, and ive been having issues with lag and stutters. It mainly happens when im watching youtube, and have something else open like a game. Youtube shorts are completly unwatchable, and are at like 15fps no matter if i have anything open or not. I have a 3060ti, 16gb ram, ryzen 7 5800x. Any help would be greatly apprecatied!
Your hardware certainly would not explain it.
Have you checked running processes using terminal top or htop command to see if a process is hogging resources behind the scenes?
sudo apt install htop
just tried while on the desktop wasnt going above 20% tried launching a game to put some stress on it and it was saying 120% cpu usage for just the game its not a super high intense game ethier its called noita
Which Nvidia driver are you using?
If unsure, you can check in Software & Updates > Additional drivers
im on the 535 right now ive tried using the 580 and i believe the 570 aswell didnt change much
Try using the 580 proprietary (Open).
The reason I suggest this is that for a while, Nvidia was trying to make their cards appear more capable by dumping much of the GPU related actions onto the CPU - I needed to narrow down a driver that stopped doing it on my RTX 3060.
Also, still please check your top running processes.
Welcome to the Forum!
Because You have a Nvidia Card, I would suggest to check first if Your System runs in Wayland. You can check that in Settings>About.
When it runs in Wayland, I would recommend to switch to X11/Xorg. to do that, go to the Login Screen. Click on Your Profile so that the Password Field appears. When it is appeared, You should see a Gear Icon in the bottom right Corner. Click on it and choose the Option '''Zorin Desktop on Xorg'' and then log in.
If You watch Videos in Browser, You could try disabling Hardware Acceleration in the Browser Settings. Another Thing: Do You have all the codecs installed? For this open Gnome Software, scroll down to the End and click on the ''Codecs'' Button. Then You get an Overview with Codec Packages. Install them all.
Further Codec support, you can install in the Terminal with the Command sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras ffmpeg vlc
to the ubuntu-restricted-extras Package one info. It is a Bundle which comes with Codecs but with Microsoft fonts, too. Because of that, You will get a Window where You have to accept a Licence Agreement. Navigate there with the Tab Key and press Enter when on ok.
It was that Nvidia card users were automatically placed on Xorg. I forgot that in 18, it is now pushing them onto Wayland, too...
im in xorg (X11) it seems to have been that by default. Another solution i already tried was reinstalling it i noicted everytime ive tried to install it when it does the pre scan it says it found one error but it ends up installing fine but only if i use the install zorin os. If i use the (install with modern nvidia drivers) it doesnt complete idk if thats of any use but just something i noticed
i have tried 2 versions of 580 open the first one wouldnt allow me to boot my game the 2nd is making it more laggy than before and crackling audio happens. its not the entire time im playing it comes in waves like ill be playing for 15 seconds smooth then frames drop for like 30 then back to smooth for a second.
cpu usage was as low as 60 and got up to 100, if i was watching youtube at the same time. if i only had the game open it was as low as 30 and got up to like 60 and was still laggy at times.
OK so... the Software & Updates jockey application (Additional drivers) GUI does not really do a thorough job on installing drivers. I recommend using the terminal for this one.
That is weird...
Well, I have confirmed that 555, 566 both dump to the CPU. I will post the commands to install the 575 here:
sudo apt remove --purge '^nvidia-.' '^libnvidia-.'
sudo apt update && sudo apt install nvidia-driver-575 nvidia-dkms-575
Reboot and test...
that made it way better but still is stuttering at times it seems to lag at first and then settle its self out but still lag maybe every couple minutes or more when i wasnt playing anything its around 30%-40% usage and when i have a video its like 50-70% having the video does make it lag more i tried turning my moniters resolution down cuz it is 4k and it made them basically go away. I wanna be able to keep the resolution and have solid performace though any other ideas?
youtube shorts seem to work if i dont enlage the screen but the second i do its at about 10fps
Are you using a browser that has Hardware Acceleration enabled?
Try disabling Hardware Acceleration in your browser, if so.
it’s disabled already.
Have you checked running processes to see if anything else is hogging resources?
yeah. nothing else seems to be hogging resources but the game.
Are all games showing these symptoms or just one or a few?
Are you running them with Steam/Proton, native games or other?
ill do some testing and let you know
