Zorin OS 17 seems to run sluggishly after recent update

Since my recent update of Zorin OS 17....my computer seems to be intermittently sluggish....mainly when I am surfing the internet. It is sluggish when using either browser which I have installed on my laptop, and so it does not appear that is merely a browser problem. I am still trying to pinpoint the underlying cause for the sluggishness. I am uncertain if my cable speed is slow at times which is causing the sluggishness. My laptop is connected to my router / modem via network cable which is only two feet from my laptop. Your assistance in pinpointing the cause for the sluggishness of my computer would be appreciated. .

Do You know what was updated?

By sluggish do you mean the internet speed goes to a crawl? Or moving things on the desktop is slower than usual? If you haven't already, you could run zorin on X to see if it's a wayland issue.

When you go to login, and are typing in your password, bottom right cog and select Zorin on X.

If that doesn't help, if you could give us some system info to go by, that would help as well

Hardware for my laptop: Intel Core I-7 which is a 1 ghz / 64 bit microprocessor.
Hard drive: 64 gigabyte / RAM: 4 gigabyte. I completed the periodic update
which Zorin periodically prompts me to do. In regard to sluggishness.....when I
have a browser window open....I may try to click on a link or scroll up or down within my browser which seems to temporarily freeze and then will start working again. I had not observed this problem prior to the completing the update. I hope that provides some further details to perhaps help troubleshoot my issue.
Thank you in advance for your assistance

Is a bit low. Gnome runs best with 8GB. Maybe Zorin lite is a best bet. Although Gnome will run 4GB you also need GB for other apps to run well.

Back to the freeze issues. It may be a regression if it was the kernel update. Could you please try boot into previous kernel and see if the problem persist.

I'm sorry? Was there a kernel update recently that I'm not aware of?

It's plausible, depending when OP updated the system.

I would agree @Storm's Suggestion to use Zorin Lite with this Specs. And maybe You need an older Kernel like the 5.15 LTS Kernel for this, too.

Within the terminal, I had copied and pasted the command lines as instructed.
When I tried to run sudo update-grub....I received this response.
Sourcing file `/etc/default/grub'
/usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig: 37: /etc/default/grub: to: not found

I am very much a novice when entering commands within the terminal. Is there a
lighter version of Zorin which I can use which will work better with my limited RAM
which you would recommend?

Yes, there's is Zorin Light witch uses XFCE desktop environment .
