i am using zorin os 17.3 core. when will the zorin os 18 upgrade available? my core updates and everything else are up to date. i'm aware that the ‘test upgrade’ option is available. what i'm wondering is, when will i be able to 'upgrade'? does anyone have any information?
Hi and welcome.
There have been lots of issues with the upgrade tool. I don't use Zorin these days but if I were I would backup my /home folder to an external drive, including hidden folders and then do a fresh install. You are less likely to hit a brick wall which would lead to yoy having to do a fresh install anyway.
The upgrade tool is still in the beta phase and there is no news yet on when the final version will be released.
ok, i see. thank you.
I was thinking about upgrading this HP Pavilion laptop, but I did a fresh installation on another HP laptop my Dad gave me, and I'm thinking that's the way to go with this one too. Everything I've read, advice-wise, has recommended that route too.
As a Windows refugee, I'm glad they're working hard on attracting, and making things work for us. I still can't switch over 100%, and there are still barriers for a lot of people. My Zorin 18 experience is good so far though. Things seem to be slowly coming together.
Could this really be "The Year of the Linux PC"??
@AZorin and @zorink - any updates about why the upgrader still hasn't come out of beta? Some communication and concrete updates would be appreciated by the community, I am sure. Especially those who paid for the "pro" version.
Please do the right thing and respond. Thank you.
Well, one of my disappointments is out of Zorin's hands to some degree in that flatpak and snap packages have swamped gnome-software (Software).
Now Zorin is ok for noobs but there are other distributions out there that get overlooked and have a closer feel to Windows than Zorin does. I also became aware of systemd-free distributions. Working from home during lockdown and beyond, I started to use Feren OS for work, and Zorin for personal use. In December 2020, I ditched Feren OS for Devuan 3.0 a systemd-free OS, and I used the Plasma DE:
Then I moved on to PCLOS, created by TexStar who also contributed to Mandrake Linux 9.2, and ironically I had to buy a new video card, a downgrade from a GT-1030 to a GT-440. It was a tough move as it uses .rpm and not .deb. There were some applications that I could not get to work in PCLOS but they have a very helpful community who actually went to the trouble of writing an .rpm script to install the application I was after. I mainly used Plasma, but they also produce xfce releases, and Community made Trinity DE release which basically is what KDE used to look like pre-Plasma
Then in December, 2024, PCLOS contributors setup a new release based on Debian, PCLOS Debian, also systemd-free and multiple .iso's with different DE's, budgie, cinnamon, MATE, Plasma, and xfce.
So my current daily is PCLOS Debian based on Debian 12. I have tried the Debian 13 version but the Tiled Menu by zren just does not work correctly and has also issues on other Debian 13 based distros I have played with (Q4OS 6.4 and LMDE 7 - note LMDE 7 comes with Cinnamon DE, I installed Plasma alongside, 6.3.6 and based on Debian 13 "trixie").
My most recent issue with PCLOS Debian has been an update from Liquorix kernel 6.18.7 to 6.18.8 - no ethernet! So need to let them know of this issue.
I booted into PCLOS Debian last night forgetting to deop to lower kernel but appears to have righted itself.
@Omnimaxus , if you want a response, it's probably an idea to post the the Feedback section. I doubt you'll get a response here.
So it's been a week. No reply. Not even when I appeal to their sense of morality (in the name of good customer service). Might as well interpret this as a "f--- you," so that's fine and dandy. Honestly their loss. They won't be getting my $50. Whoo.
I can see your reasoning, but they've posted all over the forum. Why not here?
Might be a bit too much overinterpreted. Think about the current Situation: The Zorin Upgrader is still in Beta and Zorin 18 Lite has to be released, too. So there is work to do, too. So, there are some Construction Areas ... I would guess that this has Priority now.
It has been about twenty days since they responded to other communication - including more than one message.
In a relationship, poor communication and making excuses for the partner are rather large red flags.
Business relationships are no different.
Maybe I am biased because I am capable of working on large projects and also answering communications at the same time. I may prioritize - causing me to communicate at EOD instead of in the middle, or next day...
Not twenty days later.
I've never seen any person or business entity offset by such vast times; Nor will I excuse it with "I will assume that they are just absolutely swamped, but fully devoted to it."
There are more rational explanations.
Honestly? Same here. So when I see this type of behavior, I'm like, "why can't they?" It is dead simple. And on top of that, it is absolutely the right thing to do. Respond. It's not just a courtesy; it's also a form of business integrity that signals to others what kind of people they're dealing with. I've been in management before. It is honestly NOT hard to do right by others. The only difficulty may be in moving around stuff depending on what's going on, but aside from that, it's NOT hard to eke out a sentence or two. Otherwise, people have nothing to go on with except what they do see, and the message(s) it (like it or not) inevitably sends them.
Period.

When there would be 3 or 4 People more working in the Team, I would guess that there would be more time for Stuff like this here. But when You have limited Manpower, You have to decide what has Priority.
Or: The Zorin's would have to look for a PR Guy/Girl, who is there for communicating. Then, they could concentrate on their Development Stuff and the PR Person could handle Communications here and for the Public.
Problem is, they already put out a call for someone to come do that type of work for them. Then nothing happened. It went dead. I don't know what happened, but obviously nothing came of it. Otherwise, we'd be seeing that person active on the forum or the website, posting blog after blog. So this is on them, too.
I do not understand the logic, here.
Maybe it is because I have built distros. And maybe because I have communicated plenty with Mark and others who have:
Elive is one person.
MXLinux is a handful, and usually less than that.
Whether two people or four people does not detract from:
I think there is a distinction between reasonable benefit of the doubt and... Inventing excuses out of a desire to believe.
I only remember that they looked for People for Support, but I don't know how this has ended.
When You have more People, You can share the Topics. When You have a PR Guy/Girl the Topic is to care about Stuff like this here: Communication. And so, the People who work on the System can concentrate on that.
That's what we are doing - and have been doing. Handling PR, even while guessing in the dark.
In order for the person to do this task - the ZorinGroup would need to devote exactly the same amount of energy and time into relaying that communication as they would relaying it to a blog or the public.
In this, more people cannot increase a tasks productivity, given that same communication bottleneck.
And for free, too. The Zorin Group needs to step up their game ...
