App grid blurred text issues (theme)

Hi folks,
I have an issue where the icon names and search text of app grid/app drawer are blurry or barely visible (dark text on dark background). I have found this to happen for multiple themes of vinceliuice, EliverLara too. I've attached a couple of screenshots of the issue. I would really appreciate it if someone could throw some light on this.

P.S. I am a Linux noob, moving over from windows and very excited about everything happening with Linux.

Hello,

It's not advisable to switch theme (other than icon themes), on Gnome based Desktop. Gnome in Zorin OS 18 and future releases are using Gnome's libAdwaita which makes it hell to theme.
My advise is switch to default theme and only theme the icons.

Hello Storm,
Thank you for replying and for the advice. Currently I've just themed icons, the mouse cursor and gone with the default Zorin theme. Guess, I will have to stick to that. I'll do more reading on the desktop environments sometime.
By the way, could you please share your opinion on Mint cinnamon (and its customization), if you have used it?

This is an area Storm and I differ.
Cinnamon is easily customized and adaptable. It has many built in settings and options.

If you use the gnome extension "Blur my shell" this thread can help to make the right settings in the extension:

Mint Cinnamon is one big blob of bloatware. It comes with everything and the kitchensink. Yes it's customization, that's the only good thing about to say with Mint Cinnamon.

It's also why I prefer Linux Mint Debian Edition. You can then install Plasma!

You can install Plasma on Mint Ubuntu, too.

That's very interesting. I've only read praises for Mint thus far. I'll look into it further and maybe also Pop OS' Cosmic. Thank you.

There's a lot of Mint fanatics out there, that haven't tried anything than Mint.

I prefer minimalistic distros that is clean in interface and under the hood.

Hello Forpli,
Thank you very much for the response and link to the thread. I do not have blur my shell enabled. I did see that thread earlier and thought maybe I'd install the extension and see if those settings can help, but much like the OP in that linked thread, this seems to be a themeing issue.

That is something I have observed too. Linux does seem to have some strong faction sentiments , sometimes taken a little far. Anyways, I have just dipped my feet into this sea. Few interesting distros have caught my eye like Zorin, Pop OS, Fedora. Excited to explore.

I haven't used it yet. But its official add-on repository does seem like a great idea too.

Depending what you're looking for., I can recommend Solus if you don't mind rolling distros. You will always have the latest version version of software and drivers.

Pros:
Rolling release
Easy to install
Minimalistic
Close interaction with the devs on their forum

Cons:
A small repository compared to mastadons like Debian and Arch, but you have flatpak, if you don't mind using flatpaks.

I don't have anything particular needs in mind. I'm just getting a feel for what Linux offers (and its a lot). Like I said, I just moved recently over from Windows and am in my 'traveller' phase.
But I would love to have a distro suggestion for a decently all-purpose OS that has good battery management, for my laptop.
I will look into Solus too. Thank you very much.

And that doesn't come from Nowhere. The Thing is: When You are new to Linux, Mint can offer a relatively good Entry. You wouldn't need the Terminal (much). There is a lot of graphical Solutions. And they increase that. The Cinnamon Desktop is functional and do what it should do. And You can theme it.

But on the other Side is what @Storm mentioned: It brings a lot of Stuff with it. If You want it or not. And when You don't want that, it is/can be a bit annoying to remove it.

A Distro what offers in my Opinion a good preinstalled Software Stack is Fedora. There is not too much preinstalled. And that what is preinstalled, is useful. It offers a lot of Desktop's where You can choose from. But Fedora itself might not the the easiest first Entry to Linux.

Fedora is good also in the approach of minimalism. But if you have a nvidia card it can get tedious to get things to work without getting into RPMFusion reposirories.

you will have to find in gnome-shell.css

.overview-tile
.grid-search-result
.search-entry:focus
.search-entry:hover

and add un every section
text-shadow: none;

When I tried the standard Mint a few years back with Cinnamon I asked on the forum if possible to install Plasma. No was the definitive answer. That is where LMDE version of Mint is better as there are more DEcs available via Synaptic.

Hmm ... I can't understand this Answer. Because of the Ubuntu Base, You should be able to install Plasma, too. It might be not a good Idea because of the Focus on Cinnamon for this Distro but in Theory, You shouold be able to install Plasma and all other DE's who are in the Repo's.

I have found it and added that and it helps:

The only Stuff what is not affected with this are the Search Results:

Can You name the Value/s for these, too?
