I was on here back in September asking for help with a problem, and now I'm forced to come back here with the same issue. I don't know why, but the problem seemed to fix itself for a few months, but now it's cropping up yet again.
To make a long story short, one of the icons on my desktop keeps moving out of place, and I don't know how to fix it. It appears to be completely random, so I don't know what's causing it, or how I can even replicate it.
I like to have my icons arranged on the left hand side in a particular order, but for some reason one of the icons will randomly shift to the next column for no reason at all. It doesn't matter how many times I fix it, it just keeps happening. I was hoping the dev team would address the problem by now, but the same stupid problem keeps happening. I was planning to just ignore it and move them back manually whenever it happened, but now it's really starting to tick me off.
Can someone please tell me why this keeps happening?
I've tried using the auto arrange feature to fix the icon whenever it shifts, but the problem is that I want them arranged in a particular order, and the auto arrange function doesn't allow for this. This leaves me no choice but to manually arrange the icons every time it happens, which is typically 1-2 times a day.
I should mention that I do switch between two displays. One is a 1440p monitor and the other is a 1080p TV. I thought this was likely the problem, but the icon rarely moves when I switch between the two displays, leading me to believe that this isn't the main source of the problem.
I've also tried the "Keep Arranged" option, but this just rearranges the icons in a way that I don't want (a bit counter-intuitive if you ask me).
I'm pretty sure it has to do with shifts in resolution, like when running something in fullscreen mode, connecting/disconnecting a new monitor, or anything else that forces the desktop layout to recompute.
Try this, this should fix the problem:
If it works you can then bind that to a keyboard shortcut to at least ease the pain until this gets resolved.
From You Picture, I see the Line on the Left. So, this one folder jumps in the Line right of it and at the bottom is this free Space.
I have an Idea: Maybe the System thinks that this free space is too small for the Icon - even when it not. I would like to test this. I guess, you are use the Zorin Taskbar at the bottom, right? If yes, go to the Taskbar-Settings and there to the Position Tab and set the ''Panel Length'' to 80. thenarrange the Icons like You want and then make a Reboot.
I played with the panel settings a bit to see what would happen, but I'm not really willing to put the panel length at 80% on a permanent basis. I'd much prefer to just use my desktop as it, rather not have to make major compromises like this.
It some sort of race condition: the desktop loads and attempts to place the icons at the given positions, but then the layout shifts, which makes the calculations incorrect. When it happens the other way around, the icons appear at the right position.
I did try the method, but it still keeps happening. I understand that a temporary solution might work if it's programmed into a hotkey, but I would much rather have a permanent solution. I will be reporting this yet again to the devs, but I just hope they can fix the issue at some point. I'm honestly not asking for much here.
I understand, and agree with you, workarounds are great for temporary patches but this is clearly an outstanding issue. I just wanted to make sure that my "fix" patch was working for you, if nothing else to ease the pain a little in the meantime.
Now I'm even more sure that this is the reason why this happens. Just found out accidentally while tweaking with the taskbar's intellihide which shifts icons a bit:
Hopefully this helps the developers to pinpoint the problem exactly!
