Hauppauge Dual T2 Tuner

Hi All Masters, I have installed ZorinOs today and also all the necessary files that were instructed in Hauppauge website for Hauppauge Dual T2 Tuner and were successful. But after doing a restart, Pc hang on a black screen. I had tried the following but to no avail.

  1. In recovery mode: utilized the features there to recover startup
  2. Re-install ZORIN OS without updates

Please Help

Thanks & Best Regards

Hi All Masters, I am so sorry for not remembering to mention I have installed “Kaffeine” and also some files through the Terminals for my USB Hauppauge Dual Dvb-T2 Tuner that was instructed in Hauppauge webpage, “ Hauppauge Support | Running WinTV TV tuners and HD PVR 2 under Linux ”.

The commands I have executed in Terminals are highlighted in Italic/Red as follows,

First, determine the version of Ubuntu you are running

To do this, run this command:

dpkg -l | grep linux-image-generic-hwe

If a line is displayed beginning with "ii", then you are running the HWE version of Ubuntu. You will need to know if you are running HWE this in a moment when you install the mediatree.

Download the PPA

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:b-rad/kernel+mediatree+hauppauge

After this first line, click enter when prompted to add this PPA.

sudo apt-get update

Install the media tree

If you are running an HWE version of Ubuntu, use this command:

sudo apt-get install linux-hwe-mediatree

If you are NOT running HWE, use this command:

sudo apt-get install linux-mediatree

Firmware Install

At this point, you also need to install TV firmware if you are using one of the following TV tuners (most North American TV tuners do NOT need firmware to be loaded, so this mainly applies to European/ANZ tuners):

• a Hauppauge DVB TV tuner in Europe, Australia or New Zealand (example: WinTV-soloHD, WinTV-dualHD, WinTV-quadHD, WinTV-HVR-5525, Starburst 2, etc.)

• 461e or WinTV-NOVA-S2

• WinTV-quadHD USB for North America

To download and install Hauppauge TV tuner firmware, run this command:

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-hauppauge

Close Terminal and restart your computer.

I had also done a re-installation of Zorin Os and the above same. But sadly the Pc again hangs on a black screen after doing a restart.

Please Help

Thanks & Best Regards

First have a look at this pre-installation advice: Before you install

You report you now have a black screen on boot, even after re-installation of Zorin.

Are you able to get to your grub menu and select safe graphics?

Does "Try Zorin" from Live USB run OK?

I don't know anything about this product, but this line in particular caught my attention. You're installing a new firmware which may not be compatible with either the OS or the machine itself.
Officially, they only support up to the Ubuntu 21.10 version while Zorin OS 17 is based on Ubuntu 22.04. This alone may be the reason why it's causing trouble.

In their website there's a support contact form and chat that you can use to ask them about this.

Hi Zabadabadoo & Zenzen,
Thank you for the advice.
Before installation of the files for Hauppauge Dual Dvb-T2 Tuner and Kaffeine, the display was good. It turns to black screen after installing the same and doing a restart. I can go to Recovery Mode but I'm not sure about Grub Menu. Please teach me how to get there?

If GRUB is not showing at boot, during boot tine press Esc key if you installed with EFI, if MBR, press left Shift key.

Hi Swarfendor437, thank you for the answer.
Yes, I am able to enter GRUB by pressing Esc key. Please tell me how to select “Safe Graphic”?

It's usually advanced mode from memory.

What command must I execute in GRUB mode to select ‘Safe Graphic’?

I wikl remind myself tomorrow when I will put Zorin HDD in hotswap bay.

OK, fun and games, fun and games. I remembered I installed Zorin with EFI and used @Aravisian 's advice on another thread that if an EFI install, press the Esc(ape) key. Nope! Just get the bootloader script, with the [OK]s scrolling by! I discovered that GRUB in Zorin 17.1r2 has a timeout of 0 and is set to be hidden! So to get it to show:

  1. Open a terminal and enter:
sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Here is mine (after amended):

So the two lines you need to edit are first:

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden (Change this to 'show')

second:

GRUB_TIMEOUT=0 (Change this to '10' [seconds])

Now press Ctrl+ O to write the changes, then Ctrl+ X to exit out of the nano editor.

Now reboot, and during the boot process, press the left shift key and the GRUB menu will appear. GNU/Linux does not have a safe graphic mode as such, it has 'advanced recovery' option instead. However, it will put you machine in low graphics mode, so it is essential that you never use the 'continue' option. Be sure you have a network connection if having to install packages. If you just need to edit the GRUB file, then ensure you choose the option to 'drop to root prompt'.
