How to read & write data between zorin os & windows partition

hi,

I am trying to access my Windows 11 files & folders from Zorin OS- i can see all the files & folders - but i can't copy, read & write..

your suggestion would help...thanks

This could be as simple as the power management setting in windows being set so that fast boot / startup is enabled. I know in the past when I dualbooted it would regularly get re-enabled through updates and random stuff, so that's what I would check first. It's in power settings under advanced if I recall correctly, but its been a while so the exact area is a bit hard for me lol.

If that's on, it would lock the files until it was booted back into windows properly, from recollection. I would check fastboot in the bios too to see if that is on, but I would do the windows thing first.

What formatting do you have in use for the Windows partition.

How do You see them? Did You go in Nautilus and there to ''Other Places'' and choose there Your Windows System?

ntfs format

Yes....go to other location...and there i can see all my partitions... upon clicking it will mount the partition for that particular OS, and i can view the entire windows file....but can't copy, read & write...thru and fro...

Yes, taht can be. Do You see at the folders maybe a Lock or a Cross or other Symbols? Things like that say that these are protected and you can't simply to anything with them.

I would have 2 Idea's for that:

  1. nautilus-admin
With that Package installed, you can open Nautilus with Admin Rights. to install it, open the Terminal and type sudo apt install nautilus-admin but don't wonder that You can't find it in the Programs. Taht is more like a Plugin for Nautilus and is ''in'' Nautilus. You can see it with a right-click:

This is the Pendant to ''Run as Administrator'' what You maybe know from Windows.

So, You could go in Nautilus over ''Other Places to the Folder/File that You want, use this function, type in Your Password (could be that You have to do it twice) and then it should open with Admin Rights and then You could try to copy a File.

  1. Terminal
Navigate normally in Nautilus to the Folder/File and then open in this Path a Terminal. For this click on the Top in the Path-Line of Nautilus on the 3 dots and choose the Option ''open in Terminal'':

Then the Path open in the Terminal. And in the Termial use for Example a sudo cp [File-Name] Command to copy something from it. Or You copy the Path from the Line in the Terminal to bring something to it with a sudo command.

There are a number of items on the forum relating to writing to a NTFS partition or drive, including: Can't write on NTFS drive

Maybe that will give some guidance.

Also: Unable to write on NTFS partitions on HDD

Most of the time it’s

sudo apt install --reinstall ntfs-3g

hi,

I tried...not working...

hi,

I have been using Paragon ntfs for mac & Paragon Linux for Windows... read & write data works very nice..

I downloaded the trial version of this program....but i am not able to install...Can somebody guide me with the installation steps.....appreciate...thanks

I would appreciate some guidance for installation...thanks.

From your link

Easy to Install and Uninstall

Simply run the assistant scripts (install.sh and uninstall.sh scripts) to perform all the necessary operations to build the driver, install it, and deactivate and remove it from the platform.

Have you made sure both Windows 11 and Zorin are in the same workgroup? Have you enabled sharing on both systems? The obvious choice for security is to use your Public folders on each system to be shared, and avoid putting any personal or criticak data in them.

no nothing's working....and i am just wasting time......anyway's iam already using linux for windows by paragon.......so ntfs for linux should work fine.....

i just need installation guidance of this program.....thanks..

The website gives clear instructions. Is the download a zip file or tarball? Extract the files which should create a folder, I am guessing it is called 'Free'?

Open a terminal then:

cd Downloads

then

cd Free (or whatever the extracted folder is called)

then

sudo ./install.sh

press Enter, then answer 'y' to any prompts that follow.

thanks....but not working....

this is ridiculous......nothing's working...strange

You will want to have the user account password activated on the Windows. Then enter the "Windows user account name and password on the Zorin OS side to access the folder/s on Windows.

I see it says retail express on the comnand line which suggests reference to a paid version. Their site claims a slimmed down free version.

this is actually a trial version downloaded from their website...
