That sounds like Motherboard settings and those do not use esc key. Those use F2 or F10 and so on.

This is helpful, as above I was trying to figure out if it works, at all.
Can you be specific as to which distros? For example, Linux Mint 18? Linux Mint 20?
This may help narrow down what kernel or package differences are involved.
