HP Envy Sound not working

Hello everyone,

I am very new to Linux. I just finished installing Zorin OS Pro today after checking out Mint, Pop OS and Zorin via Live USB. I found Zorin OS looked best, therefore I chose Zorin.

However, I did not notice during my test that the laptop speakers weren't working.

I checked it out and followed

first, but it seems like a general issue with the sound in my laptop model, see here:

And from that question, I found this:

Looks like a general sound issue with HP Envy laptops, which seems to get a fix with kernel 6.9. However, my kernel is now on 6.8.0-45-generic which is also the newest which I can find in the Zorin repositories.

The thread also mentions a fix for kernel 6.8 and lower, here:

But since I don't know a lot about all of this yet, I am unsure what to do now. I am not yet comfortable enough to install a new kernel, and I also don't understand what I am supposed to do with this fix on github.
I can get sound out of my laptop if I connect a bluetooth speaker, so I could live with this for a certain period.

What would you suggest? Does it make sense to wait until kernel 6.9 or higher comes to Zorin OS? From your experience, how often do we get kernel updates?
Or would you suggest going for the github fix or installing a new kernel?
Or are there even different options which I don't know about yet?

Thanks & Regards,
Nadine

You can always install the pop os kernel which uses 6.9.3

Welcome to the Forum!

So, you already tried it with PulseAudio Volume Control, yes? It is a Tool for Audio Input and Output.

The github Thing is unfortunately too high for me. So, I can't help with that.

Install a newer Kernel ... Well, there would be the Ubuntu Mainline Tool. It is a graphical Interface to install other Kernels. For this, you would have to add a PPA (a third-party Source). And then you could install it. The follow Video is an older One, but explains it good I would say. You can take a Look at it and decide if You want try it.

Hello,

yes, I did try with the PulseAudio Volume Control.

But although it shows the bar that there should be sound coming out of the internal laptop speakers, I hear nothing. When I connect my bluetooth speaker, I can test it successfully with that tool.
The internal speakers - listed as sof-hda-dsp - show hardly any profiles. When I open the profile select list, I only see "Play HiFi quality music" or "Off". According to screenshots I have seen, there should be a lot more options?

Kind Regards,
Nadine

Hello again,

thanks for the video about the mainline kernel. After watching it, I felt confident enough to give it a try, and it worked!
I installed a newer kernel, and I have now sound from my internal laptop speakers. Yay!

And also thanks for the Youtube channel. This youtuber also seems like a knowledgeble guy, and also nice to listen to, I subscribed!

Thanks a lot & Kind regards,
Nadine

If considered to be the solution, can Ponce-De-Leon's post #3 be marked as :ballot_box_with_check:Solution by clicking the check-box?
