I could disable that but I need something to replace it because I need app indicators
Does it work with the deactivated Zorin AppIndicators? If yes and You searching for Alternatives there would be:
AppIndicator and KStatus Notifier:
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/615/appindicator-support/
Tray Icons Reloaded:
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/2890/tray-icons-reloaded/
I didn't try yet, but I will do try now after you had listed me some alternatives.
Also the error happened again but in xorg this time not wayland.
The full log is ~600 kb. You can get the log here:
The latest logs show a segmentation fault after the initial login. Annoyingly, it's not clear about what caused it, or even why it reverted back to the default settings. At least, as far as I can tell.
Based on this, I'm not so sure anymore that the ZorinOS AppIndicator extension is the issue; the error that I was referencing before still appears in the log, but at a later point, so it's probably not related to this, possibly even harmless.
If I had to guess again now, I would say the issue happens because the external monitor is not properly detected on time. Have you noticed this issue while using only the laptop screen by any chance, without external monitors? Another way to test this would be to change the taskbar settings so that it only shows on the laptop (unless you are already doing this, of course).
If you can get by using this setup for a few days without issues, it would be a good indicator there's some sort of race condition with the detecting the screen by the time the taskbar settings load.
I booted my laptop without any external monitors in X-org session. The problem happened again. I want to note that Zorin app indicators wasn't activated.
This problem ALMOST ALWAYS happens when using Wayland, but less frequently on xorg. I will continue using my setup without external monitors.
Also, I would like renaming the title to:
Logging in sometimes fails in Xorg and Wayland, and disables all extensions.
Just done that requested title change for you.
Can we go back to square one?
What is make and model of machine, CPU, Graphics, RAM?
This is probably still worth a try. With everything configured for the single built-in laptop monitor from now on, it's possible that this won't happen again... going with my assumption that the monitors are related, that is.
Unfortunately, I'm also out of ideas, so it may be a good time to retrace our steps in case we've been making too many assumptions at this point.
Before I respond, the issue occurred again in Xorg without an external monitor.
It seems like the problem is more frequent without an external monitor.
Laptop name: Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15ITL05
RAM: 16 GB
CPU: 11th Gen Intel® Core⢠i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz à 8
GPU (Dedicated, Performance): NVIDIA Corporation TU117M [GeForce MX450]
GPU (Integrated, Power saver): Mesa IntelĀ® Xe Graphics (TGL GT2)
Disk space: 512.1 GB (Dual boot, Windows 10 and Zorin 17.1)
OS Type: 64-bit
It doesn't look like it would stop with the one monitor setup.
Me too, but what do you mean by "retrace our steps"? How do I retrace my steps?
I went up a few posts showing that login error message about network authorisation. Have you at any time made yourself a Standard User? If you have then you can't modify anything on your system.
You say it drops to advanced recovery. When it does, drop to root prompt and enter:
sudo whoami
and post back the results.
If you haven't changed your privileges, another possibility is a corrupt .Xauthority file. I covered how to resolve this for the login loop scenario in both Unofficial Manuals I authored for Zorin 15 and 17.
Page 352-353 of the Open Dyslexic version of Unofficial Manual for Zorin 17 Core
No
What? I don't remember saying that. I don't think it falls back to any other user than me because whenever this error happens, it requests me to log in to my account.
Okay, I'll check that.
I also noticed that after update, safe mode triggers immediately.
=advanced mode.
I have read the manual made by @swarfendor437, It didn't fix my problem, I also have some suggestion. Also, my home directory seems corrupt? Read below for details!
I have read the first method about .Xauthourity, but I don't have any file named like that in my home folder even with hidden files shown, nor in the root folder.
I also just noticed I have 3 folders in home directory.
Here is the list of folders:
-futosh-dirozini
-futoshdirozini (My home directory)
-merrywether
merrywether is the previous name of my first Zorin installation, it ran fine, but I needed to reinstall after messing it horribly.
futosh-dirozini is the second installation when I installed Zorin with the wrong bootloader.
futoshdirozini is this current installation.
For some reason they still exist in my home dir.
For you information, I installed the 2 latest zorin installations using manual partitioning.
Suggestion for documentation
I experineced login failure where it would not log me in and ask for password repeatedly, the reason was simply full storage space. Freeing up some space fixed the issue. This happened in Linux mint.
Can I ask how you created the install manually?
I simply removed the partition used by zorin by clicking the -.
Then I click + on the free space and use these settings:
- Size: all remaining free space
- Type for the new partition: Primary
- Location for the new partition: Beginning
- Use as: Ext4 journaling file system
- Mount point: /
Finally, I click install now, without changing anything in bootloader.
OK, I would take a look at a fresh install and format thus:
-
Create an EFI Partitition of 512 Mb formatted to FAT32. It should be marked as
/boot/esp or /boot/efi (flag set to be bootable) -
Create an 80 Gb (81920 Mibs) '/' root system, formatted to Ext4 and marked as Primary partition.
-
Create a swap area at end of drive which equates to double your physical ram, but if you have an SSD do not create a linux swap partition as swap is not needed for SSD's
-
Remainder of drive format to Ext4 and mark as /home.
Remember to state that GRUB gets in installed against hard drive label, if sda is the first only drive, select sda, or whatever SSD label is.
I did not understand anything.
Did you mean:
Install zorin with the specified parameters above??
My laptop doesn't have a big storage for both OSes.
Also, please provide more detail:
-Should I remove my old installation of zorin (This one.)?
-Is this a temporary fresh installation?
Zorin support is not available for Core users of Zorin, only Pro users.
I should stop posting here?
I do not understand. Anyway, I will just go with my assumption and do a fresh install.
Just in case, make a note of what extensions and other programs you install. I was also curious if maybe using another layout resulted in the same behavior, in case you can test that.
I was reading a bit more on how to get a glimpse at what that segmentation fault error that appears in the logs. But that's definitely more complicated, so we can look into that only if needed.
