I have recently installed Zorin OS on a pc. After the install of Zorin OS, alongside with Windows, I noticed that pc on Zorin is still not able to produce sound, whereas the same PC, is perfectly able to do when booting it up in Windows.
First, I thought the problem came forth from the tv with the embedded sound system not being properly recognised, though Zorin was able to start the pc in right pixel setting. Then I checked the properties of pc and then I found out, that the Graphics didn't mention Nvidia at all, but llvmpipe instead.
I already did most of the steps from here, though i dont know for certain if I can select the right drive metapackage.
Can anybody help to get this card working or tell me how to diagnose this problem further? As a new user of Linux, I don't know anything about solving hardware issues with Linux at the moment.
The Nvidia 50-series, are the latest offering from this year. Zorin OS 17 uses the 6.8 kernel, which I think is too old for the 50 series GPU's. You can update your kernel to 6.14 if you can't wait. Or, wait till Zorin OS 18 is released, and there should be no issue.
Do you know what soundcard your PC has?
I am guessing from replies re Graphics card (NVidia GeForce RTX 5060) maybe your PC is quite new, maybe requires a later kernel than 6.8 for both graphics and sound.
Can you open terminal and type:
alsamixer
In alsamixer, hit F6 to list/select soundcards.
What soundcard/s are listed? Post a screenshot here.
In alsamixer, hit F5 to show All sound channels (both capture and output). Post a screenshot here.
I'm on my phone at the moment so I can't do due diligence, but if that's the proprietary, the open package may work better. I've needed to use that since 575, and while that sounds recent, I ran several betas during that period. This was true with both packages and the .run installer.
Edit: Now that I'm at my desk, if the 580s don't behave well with the packages Aravisian suggested installing, you might need to remove them and try
The open drivers have an open source license attached to them; the others have a proprietary license. I don't know what the functional difference is, but I've had the proprietary drivers fail to cooperate lately while the open worked fine. You MAY not need the open package; I quit trying proprietary between 575 and 580.
I did the command nvidia-smi in the terminal and it confirmed that Zorin isn't able to communicate with the video card. I also performed the other command, but the response was: command not found.
@ Ponce, i switched to Xorg at the logging screen. As far as I know, no difference detected. But then I again, I am dont know what its supposed to do.
@Forpli, I checked the boot. Secure boot is disabled, on some pc's secure disables a dual-boot pc. I cant confirm yet if fast boot in Windows is enabled and if fast boot in BIOS is enabled. I have a ASRock motherboard, i will check that as well.
Zabadabadoo, as requested, a printscreen from my system in the terminal with alsamixer. Strange that the pc does somehow know there is a Nvidia card for hdmi sound, but it cant recognize the rest. I have also added a screen shot of the other specs of my pc.
The pc is from a small company in the Netherlands, but they use hardware from known brands. Its a decent/good gaming pc that will hopefully last 8 years before complete replacement or hardware upgrades are needed to keep up with the average games.
@Magnibigg, I believe so with the NVIDIA Graphics I did the try-out with this option and from there, the installation.
@ Aravisian, I shall try that. I did both the 570 and 575, the 570 open kernel worsened the situation. Current one selected is the 575 driver metapackage (tested, proprietary)
Alright, I have installed the nivdia 580 driver proprietary (non-open) from Canonical. I am no longer able to log into Xorg, but either normal or Wayland instead. Anyway, no success, the pc doesn't recognise it still.
I also tried the 580 open kernel. That makes matter only worse as the machine now only send signals to the tv, that it can't decode and thus resulting in no screen. I had to restart Zorin with advanced options and went for the normal start with the lowest graphic number. I then returned to the 580 proprietary, it at least gives a signal to the tv that it can work with.
@ Startreker, if that is the case, do you know how long I have to wait for Zorin 18.3? I use the pc for almost only for gaming, which can be done for some time on Windows 11, despite my contempt for that version of Windows.
We don't have an exact time table, but if I had to guess, maybe this fall. I only say this, because Zorin OS 16 released in late fall. (I'm still on OS 16) I don't remember when OS 17 released. So, if were lucky, this fall.
I see it. Only the Nvidia HDMI sound is seen by alsamixer, no other soundcard.
Maybe trying a newer linux kernel on the existing Z17.3, or trying a different Distro with a newer kernel may reveal something. Release of Z18 is probably some time away.
