Pop! OS topic / talk / support (all in one)

Hi all,

I recently installed on a external ssd Pop! OS 21.04, the first thing i noticed is that it using the nvidia driver pre installed 470.63.01, that driver got released 1 month ago. Zorin is using a much older driver for nvidia, why ??? Pop! OS is also ubuntu based so why does zorin not use their driver package ???

The second thing i did like whas the "factory reset" option in the settings menu. When i hit that one a installation wizzard came to reinstall the entire os without the need of a usb stick. Everything got deleted. I hope to see that feature too someday in zorin os.

Third, it came with way less apps pre-installed then zorin os 16 does. I installed the alsa-tools-gui to fix my laptop sound (same like i had to do in zorin os). Below you see the picture what got pre-installed (minus the sound & video folder).

Fourth: dkms is installed by default, so if i swap to newer driver from the nvidia site dkms gets flagged by its installer so if a new kernel gets released i don't have to reinstall the nvidia driver over and over again. Mint 17.x has this too, why does zorin not have this by default ?

I didn't do long tests yet, but these things i just noticed. So far i like them both

Pop! OS should also fix their store a bit, when i write something in there it will just freeze the application sometimes. I also noticed this when using the installer from the live usb and changed keyboard settings when i wanted to test the keys.

Hey there Michel!

I can't tell you how happy I am to see you also enjoying POP OS. Now you see what I been telling you about this whole time right? Pretty awesome ha? And you already notice some of the awesome features I been talking about.

Don't forget, POP OS has direct upgrade functionality as well, and Zorin users have been crying for this function for at least 2-years now. So that is an option that the Zorin team should definitely implement. I also agree that the restore function is great too!

I have encountered the freezing issue in the software store that you are talking about, but I know the cause of it. Whenever you launch the software store, it immediately check for updates. It does this everytime regardless if it had just updated or not, protocol.

Now, if you don't give it time to finish searching for updates, and you immediately jump right into searching, it will freeze the store. Solution, at least for now, don't start a search function until you know the software store is done searching for updates.

POP OS can be used for just about everything, much like Zorin OS can. But where POP OS differentiates itself, in my humble opinion, is it gamers situated OS. If you are a gamer, your gonna want POP. As you've already noticed, POP gets driver updates more often.

Just remember, to only use Nvidia PROPRIETARY drivers, don't ever use the "TESTED", ask me how I know lol. And since you have a GTX 1070 in your sexy machine, the 470.63 driver is far beyond what it needs already, and thus you shouldn't have any issues.

Technically the Nvidia 382 driver supports your card, but who wants to use such an ancient driver? LOL Keep enjoying POP, and keep providing updates. Don't forget to post your screenfetch and I wanna see a stacer screenshot too, let me see the delicious hardware, and how POP is handling it.

Oh I crack myself up, how POP is handling it. HEHE

There are 3 things on pop os that annoys me like hell.

  1. The translation is half done, i have alot of english text everywhere mixed. Zorin OS 16 has the dutch translation much better, i didn't encounter much english words in zorin.

  2. When i want to install a gog exe file i can't do anything on pop os, whine is half installed (i can't find the app icon anywhere). Also when i open lutris i have less options compared to zorin os 16. To tell the truth zorin os is for windows new comers much better to use out of the box.

  3. The pop store freezing is also β– β– β– β– , i just tested what you said it's not only by updating but also by installing something from that store.

I will stick with zorin os 16, still feels better for me.

Sorry you were dealing with more issues. I certainly understand your want to stay on Zorin OS. And it's good to get your feedback. Not enough people on here test POP OS. But I'm going to stick with POP OS cause it works for me.

However, having said that. I do enjoy playing around with Zorin OS 16 on my workstation PC. I just like using it right now as a social media platform to communicate with you all here.

Which allows me to dedicate my main rig for watching content or playing content, on my TV. Hopefully you can try POP again someday. Now I need to get some sleep

pop os will remain on my external drive for more testing and to install apps on IF i managed to get that working. It's always good to have a main os and a test os so you won't get a messy main os haha.

I've got 470.63 driver. But my OS is installed 20 days ago...

Talking about screenshots - what's with memory usage? Only my browser is running. Is this normal?

So i tried a few things again on pop os!. First i really wanted to know why language is half baked. So i went into settings -> region & language -> installed language and i got a message it was not fully installed and i could install the rest. After installation i removed all others like japanese, russian, german etc. Well after the update there is not much of a difference.

See here:

Here are a few things that not got translated (and there is more):

As for installing gog games i opend the terminal and entered "wine installation path here"

So far so good. I wonder what zorin did so that you don't need the terminal to install .exe files

Yes, as long as you are running CORE, that means gnome. And gnome means, lots of memory usage. This is the reason why some people can't wait for the Zorin team to release OS 16 LITE.

DUDE, that is one sweet machine you got there, I am actually impressed, good solid specs. But why your CPU speed is unknown to Stacer is beyond me, perhaps a sensor is offline.

If you go to your resources tab, which is the icon bellow the gear icon, then click on the memory filter a couple of times, you should see the biggest offender on RAM usage at the top of the list.

Glad to hear that GOG is going well, even though you still have issues with languages.

As far as what Zorin did, I don't think Zorin did anything, other then include the Windows Program Loader, which is a component of WINE.

I forget which WINE version it was that I installed, but one of them comes with the Windows Program Loader. I just did a Google search, learned how to install it.

But hey, if it works in Terminal, that can't be all bad. AT least with terminal you can see if there are any errors. Only problem with launching GUI, is that GUI's don't usually provide error information unless an APP crashes lol.

Transfer games over from zorin os lutris to pop os was also very easy. I just mount the ssd where zorin and the games are installed on and just add those in lutris and they run out of the box. I had to reinstall vredist from mass effect legendary edition to get it the game to work.

My stacer:

Gnome lockscreen when unlocking is the same as Zorin OS -> GNOME lockscreen

So it's not Zorins fault or pop.

See, I like it when things are easy, makes life happy. I see your rocking that beautiful background of the tropics, very nice. Also, if you had widened the window on your Stacer in the last screenshot, you would have been able to see what process was running.

But the memory usage is the bare minimum that I have seen my POP OS use as well. But its not so much POP OS itself, its really mostly Gnome. Well that and, Chrome, and yes freaking CLAMTK virus deffinitions of the CLAMD style. LOL

And yes you are right it is the same, cause they are both using the same one from Gnome isn't it? And since they are both using the same Gnome shell 3.38, that kind of makes both OS's the same in certain areas.

@StarTreker, i managed to get the nvidia driver installed from the nvidia website. Didn't find a good tutorial because there where things missing. So i created my own tutorial for now. Need it ? because you can update nvidia without uninstalling the previous one + it signs dkms module so if pop os does a kernel upgrade you dont have to reinstall the driver again.

pop OS! running 470.74 driver

HEHE, Michel you are a tricky one you are. Look at you, upgraded to the latest version. POP OS was like, "Yawn....I will upgrade to 470.74 when I am ready" And then you were like, "No you will upgrade it now, fine, I will do it myself"

Yeah i can do some testing on pop os! haha. Now i want to test dkms on zorin to see if i have to reinstall nvidia again after kernel upgrade haha.

Tutorial for manually install the nvidia driver on Pop! OS 21.04:

Also what i really like in pop os is the dkms function that is pre installed. When i now swap to a different kernel i don't have to reinstall my nvidia driver anymore like i have to do in zorin os. Why is this not added by default ? Linux mint used this function already back in 2014.

I have no idea, maybe the Zorin bro's don't know anything about it?

Well i changed my tutorial again, added dkms install for zorin.

Today i manually installed wine and winetricks, now i get the option to install .exe files from gog. Also my mass effect games didn't boot in lutris because it lacked of directx, i managed to bypass this to add directx 11 as native in lutris. But i didn't like it and installed directx from the game it self, removed the native option and it's working great :sunglasses:

Pop OS! is getting my interest now haha, i have everything running like i have on zorin os now.

@StarTreker, do you know why i can't create new text documents on the desktop in Pop OS! ? Fixed, create new txt document and save it in templates

Awesome, looks like your getting things configured quite nicely. Once you get it all setup how you want it, its really an awesome gaming OS. And there is nothing wrong in rocking two Linux distro's at one time, as long as the other OS your rocking, is not Windows lol.

I just told my wife today that i am not going to use windows anymore because i can do everything on linux (with games now) what i used to do in windows. Steam did a fantastic job there with proton. Lutris is much easier to use than in the past.

Yeah i do have windows on a nvme drive sitting there. But i don't think windows 10 will last long there . Maybe i will install pop! os on it so i don't need to use the external drive.
