We actually tried that earlier with

sudo apt install --reinstall zorin-os-desktop

Doing the above will reinstall GDM and Gnome.

I see no harm in trying it again... But I am beginning to worry a Bad Sector on the hard drive has failed, taking critical files with it...

That is a generic "USB could not be read error"
Please unplug all USB devices excluding mouse and keyboard and try rebooting... let's see if the error message changes yet again...
