Hello! I've been using Zorin OS for a couple of months right now without many major problems, but as of recently when I boot up my computer it gets stuck in a screen with the asrock and zorin logo like this. I've tried
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
but it didn't work. I am actually able to boot up perfectly fine if I choose advanced options and boot up in recovery mode without doing anything else, I just go to recovery mode and proceed with the normal boot up. I have no idea what's going on and how to fix this. (PS: I do have secure boot disabled in BIOS)
My specs are:
ASRock A520M-HDV
AMD Ryzen™ 5 5600G with Radeon™ Graphics × 12
Ram - 16GB
Please help me fix this.

" The boot hang on Ubuntu 24.04 with an ASRock A520M-HDV and Ryzen 5 5600G is caused by a kernel-firmware version mismatch where the kernel sends a command to the GPU’s micro-engine scheduler (MES) that the installed firmware does not support. This issue specifically affects systems with GC 11.0.4 graphics running the linux-hwe-6.17 kernel, resulting in a black screen during boot.
To resolve this, you must update the linux-firmware package to version .26 or later, which includes the necessary MES firmware version 0x52 . Because this package is in the noble-proposed repository, you must first boot into an older working kernel (e.g., 6.8.x ) via the GRUB menu, enable the proposed pocket, and install the update.
Resolution Steps:
- Temporary Fix: Boot using an older kernel (like 6.8.x ) from the GRUB "Advanced options" menu to access the system.
- Permanent Fix: Enable the
noble-proposed repository, install linux-firmware version .26 , and reboot into the 6.17 kernel.
- Alternative Workaround: If you cannot boot an older kernel, add the
nomodeset parameter to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub to disable GPU hardware acceleration and allow booting.

Do You have a Dual-Boot System? Is Fast Boot in BIOS disabed, too? Did You received any Updates before this happened?

I have a Dual-Boot system with Windows, but it has never caused any problems so far. Fast Boot is disabled. If I recall correctly I did update before this happened (some necessary zorin update)
This looks like it makes sense, but I'm afraid since it's an AI-generated answer. Can anyone confirm?

When it was a Kernel Update, You could try it with booting in the previous Kernel. To do that choose on the GRUB Menu on Start-Up ''Advanced Options'' and there the Option with the older Kernel Version.

That's what I've been doing, but is there any permanent fix? Does the AI answer work?
Hi @kelowna , as others have indicated it looks like this is a problem caused by the kernel update. I am not an expert but I had a similar problem a few months ago and it was solved here.
It's great to know that you can downgrade to the previous kernel fine, but I understand why you'd want to try and get the new kernel to work. In my case, I managed to fix the problem from a downgraded kernel and then boot back in the latest (updated) kernel, so it should be possible for you too.
Without a specific error message though, it's difficult to know what exactly needs to be fixed in your case... are there any error messages that you are getting that you could share with us? I can't access the image that you posted. How long have you left it to try and boot, maybe with more time it would show what the problem is?
Good luck!

Hey @Leonos , thanks for the reply. I was able to solve the problem by setting an older version of the kernel as default boot, I'll try and do what you said and come back to the later kernel when there is a new update (if it doesn't cause any problems ofc). I didn't get any specific error message even when I left it booting for a long while, but everything is sorta fine rn!
