Zorin 18 Beta feedback/discussion thread

You could try it with a new Installation. At least I did that. And it would be good when You report that over the Feedback Function.

That depends from the Update if it is neccessary.

I've tried to plug some usb keys and it didn't work either. So I think that sadly my usb port died.

Thank you for your help!

I like the updated theme, much more nuanced.

I used Zorin OS 18 beta today. It was quite fast and smooth. However, because it was a beta, some things weren't working. Like my keyboard not working in some places. While the color isn't much different, it wasn't the old color. The new color is gorgeous! Is there a time for the official release? I'm eagerly awaiting it. I'm back on Windows for now, but I'll be back when Zorin OS 18 comes out. The webapps program looks like it will be very useful, too. For example, it would be great to add the online Photopea as a webapp and run it like a program. Can someone please tell me when version 18 will be released?

No there isn't an official Date yet.

Anyway, I'm already using the beta every day and hope I can update from beta to final.

I have a feeling the upgrade path won't be there: it this was Zorin 17.4, then yes. But since the version is incrementing to 18, it's considered "new". We'd have to pay for Pro again. The moderators can correct me if I'm wrong on that. But I don't think I am. Just FYI

You are correct: For Pro users, the download link for 17 will remain valid for 17 point releases only.
Upgrading to Zorin OS 18 can be done through the Upgrader tool, but only to 18 Pro with the purchase of 18 Pro.
IF a Zorin OS 17 pro user wants to switch to Zorin OS 18 Core, they will need to perform a fresh install.

No. It has errors.

Everything works fine for me. I only encountered only one bug for now: the window does not maximize to full screen and there are gaps when I use the top edge of the screen.

EDIT:
I just realized that it's not a bug, but a feature... I just don't understand why there are margins for options when you want to use full screen.

Someone in another thread has said Z18(Core)Beta is Wayland only. That is a worry.
Is it not like Z17 where you can chose Wayland (default) or X11?
Can someone testing Z18 please reply to clarify this.

Well, I bought Zorin 17.3 pro about a month ago. If it turns out that I have to shell out another 549 SEK or something like that to upgrade to 18! then it's definitely a thank you and goodbye to Zorin for me. Luckily I also have Linux Mint on the other hard drive.

I can confirm both Wayland and X11 are available just like before, on the login screen.

I have both Options. But it comes with Wayland by default.

The ZorinGroup is understanding of the uncertainty of timing.
I would recommend contacting them using the Pro users contact form.

On the Zorin's website for the official download for Zorin 17 pro you can read at frequently asked questions

"Will I get access to future updates of Zorin OS Pro?

The purchase will give you access to Zorin OS 17 Pro as well as future updates within the 17 release series, such as upcoming point releases. Zorin OS 18 Pro will need to be purchased separately when it will be released in the future. We will continue to support Zorin OS 17 with software updates until at least June 2027, and you will be able to use Zorin OS 17 Pro for life."

God bye

Feedback:

Setup:

Installed with Nvidia drivers

Background – messed up my Arch Linux install and wanted to try something else.

Observations:

  1. Slow compared to Arch w/KDE. Slow compared to any distro with KDE. By slow I mean general response of input actions and windows movement.
  2. Window management seems problematic – sometimes I cant close a window and there is a general lag when moving windows around
  3. Have had to “force close” file management many times
  4. Themes management seems botched, but worked around that with Gnome Tweak tool
  5. Two wallpapers only?
  6. Icon themes seem to not “stick” – have changed it back to my preferred theme several times now
  7. I cant pair my Bluetooth keyboard – not able to provide the code for pairing

Hardware works otherwise. Nice surprise to see the NIC on my dock actually working – super issue with newer kernels. My dual screen setup works.

Have my basic apps installed and working. Biggest issue probably the overall lag compared to KDE. But, nice so far and I guess it will get even better going forward.

Keep up the good work.

This one is merely due to Beta release; In the Alpha, it was a Bring Your Own Wallpaper party.

Can you check hardware acceleration? Yes, ideal would be things work out of the box, but narrowing down a cause is helpful toward that goal.

Same. nautilus froze on me twice and another time, crashed entirely. It is the later nautilus file manager so it should be more integrated...

GTK4 and LibAdwaita are strong. Have you created a .libadwaita file withing the gtk-4.0 folder of your third party theme?

Briefly tried it on Ventoy and was happy to see not much has changed, mainly updates to Gnome and the kernel.

The Activities button is now scroll-able so I won't need Panel Scroll anymore.
