Zorin 18 Beta feedback/discussion thread

After following the information on the Brave web page, the reinstallation went very well.

It was perfect, thank you very much.

I really have to say something about it. It's a great community, a place where you can just go and write. I really need it at the moment because I'm not doing so well. Enough of that. I have a question about the main channel of Zorin OS. It would be really cool if a trailer came out again, then for Zorin OS 18. I don't know how you see it, but I think it's great.

Which is the main channel of Zorin OS that you mention?
YouTube Short so that people can share it on social media?
This needs a bit polish and update:

There is also this one, already looking at Zorin OS 18, but more than 10 minutes long. Too long to be a teaser:

Overall, I am with you. A short video of 1-2 minutes which highlights the easy change from Windows to Zorin and shows the similar look which would be necessary for many in order to find their way.

Good evening to everyone in the Community. After reading the latest posts about a Trayler, I had a suggestion I'd like to share.
I'd like to see the Zorin Group, through social media or the Forum Community itself, launch promotional campaigns for Members to create video content, for example. I think it's a good idea to generate engagement for the launch, and the winner would receive a symbolic prize. Like a personalized Forum badge, a Pro subscription, or something inexpensive. Considering that Zorin OS is free and open source,
This is just a thought...

I was surprised to see only 1 video on that channel, there has been no content for 6-years!

Which is why I think you said this, as they seem to only promote on their site blog page.

Thought I would look in my Vimeo library and only just discovered my video on Zorin 15 was marked as Unregistered an not Public!

I would love to try this out. I've used Zorin in a Virtualbox VM just to play around with it, but I can't get the live installer to boot with the modern nvidia drivers natively on my laptop. I have a Lenovo Legion Pro 7i with an RTX 5080. Whenever it boots I just get a black screen with a cursor in the upper left hand corner.

If I boot without Nvidia drivers I can manage to install, but then I can't take advantage of the GPU. I am relegated to booting into Xorg with generic drivers. If I attempt to install the Nvidia 580 proprietary driver, everything goes south.

These drivers seem to work fine on Bazzite or even Ubuntu 24. Not sure what is going on there, but this is usually the type of thing that keeps me from switching from Windows to Linux.

Do you have secure boot disabled in your BIOS? When it is enabled proprietary nvidia drivers don't load correctly.

Secure Boot is disabled. I use the UEFI boot menu on the laptop to select Zorin OS from the USB drive, I select Zorin OS (with modern Nvidia drivers) from the boot menu, I get the splash screen that verifies the files for the installer, it goes to the next splash screen, then it goes to a black screen with a cursor in the upper left hand corner that blinks for a little, then the screen flashes, and goes back to the blinking cursor.

I copy you. I like the idea.
As I am not good in creating videos, my option is only to share promotional content in the future on my boomer places.
If you want to bring your proposal forward, install 18 beta and use the feedback button.

My initial reaction after booting Zorin OS 18 Beta in my virtual machine with eight 3 GHz cores, 16 threads, and 16 GB of DDR3 1866 MHz memory was: "Is that all there is?" I quickly increased the memory to 32 GB because this beta version was handling it rather playfully. I was slightly disappointed because the appearance seemed almost identical to 17.3. Now that I, and my VM, are used to it, I have to say that it's more or less the same, but it has retained its charm, and you won't discover any strange things like with Windows 10, which went to version 11. Now I'm extremely happy with Zorin OS 18, enjoying the window tiling, the smooth running (which is to be expected with these specifications), and the familiar look and feel.

Welcome to the Forum!

But You can install the Drivers after the Installation. Look in the ''Addititonal Drivers'' Tab in Software & Updates or Use the Terminal and type:

sudo apt install nvidia-driver-[Version-Number] nvidia-dkms-[Version-Number]

Replace [Version-Number] with the Driver number.

Install crashes reproducably with encyrpted ZFS, LVM with encryption works

I think that is an excellent idea. I also believe having people in the forum community that have the ability to create content, posting 'How To' videos, to teach people how to navigate and utilize all the things Zorin can do, has to offer, may also help increase the amount of Zorin users.

Cars10. Keep in mind. The Zorin brothers had to learn almost everything from scratch to be able to create what we use today. Everyone has to start somewhere. Who knows what you'll be able to create 16, 17 years from now by starting now.

Good morning

I want to change my username in Zorin 18. I went to the user screen and noticed that it allows this change. However, please let me know if I can simply change the username or if this could cause any system issues.

Thank you

User screen under settings? I'm not home at the moment, so can't send screen shots or look to give you instructions. However, I've changed my user name in setting and didn't have an issue.

It's completely safe to do since only the name that's displayed is changed. For example, I've renamed my user from "zenzen" to "jerry":

Here you can see the Zorin menu shows as "jerry", but the actual username still is "zenzen". You shouldn't worry about this unless you have a reason so no worries there.

I tried that as well. Same behavior. As soon as the driver is installed, the system goes to a black screen with a cursor in the upper left corner after rebooting. It's like it's just looping trying to load the driver.

I have been testing out 18 as well, 8 play age of empires 2 from a cd.. that no longer works. I was wondering if the guys behind Zorin could utilise Zorin lite.. as when I tried that distro it actually gave me a bigger playing screen.

File manager is also snappier which is cool .
Will I be able to change wine to be able to play like on 17
