Zorin OS 18 install failed with “E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)”

I was getting the same installer error every single time:

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
Some packages are in a broken state…

I tried:

  • Re-downloading the ISO several times (different editions + tools)
  • Using different USB sticks and mounting methods
  • Switching between installation types and partitions

Same crash each time.

Eventually I discovered the cause:
it only fails when the “Install third-party software for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and additional media formats” option is checked.

As soon as I unchecked that box, the installation finished normally.

Hi, welcome to the community!

I've moved this over to Feedback as it might be interesting to the developers to take a closer look at it.

If you go into Software & Updates (available in the applications menu) and over to the additional drivers tab, do you have any downloads available?

And could you share the output of running this command in a terminal window (also available in the applications menu)?

sudo lshw

This will list all of the hardware information, which might turn out to be quite lengthy so it's probably best to use something like pastebin.com to upload that, and paste the link here.

Welcome to the Forum!

Did You checked the Checksums of the ISO's? Did You used different Download-Servers?

since it appears to have something to do with software packages, is the attached thread perhaps helpful?

Wanted to add that I get the same when i run the Core install for modern NVIDIA drivers, even when i uncheck “Install third-party software for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and additional media formats” later on in the installation process.

Installing regular Zorin OS, with "Install third-party software" checked, worked but driver was still "Nouveau". After updating, i changed the driver to nvidia metapackage 580. That worked for me.

(nvidia GTX 1060 6TB)

I was facing exactly the same issue. I also have the GTX 1060, just as you do.

Thank you for your input on how to deal with this error!

se na instalação já da erro, imagina o sistema, linux lixo

Yep, my thoughts exactly:

Tried to install Zorin as first Linux distro just to take a look at Linux and get the same exact problem on a fresh drive. Tried it multiple times. I also chose NVIDIA driver thing (have a 4080S)

When installing, are you connecting to the net and installing aditional drivers along with the Install of Zorin OS?

Or are you installing offline?

I'm having the same issue, installing zorin on brand new SSD. The issue during installation exists with or without third party stuff checkbox checked. I ran installation with support of modern Nvidia drivers. I have MSi Stealth Notebook with geforce 4060. Tommorow I will try to make new bootable pendrive with zorin.
