16.3 is supposed to have kernel 6.2 but Lite still has 5.15

Because of a problematic Wifi card on my new laptop, I was glad to hear the new release 16.3 includes kernel 6.2 (which should support this Wifi card). Zorin OS 16.3 Is Released - Zorin

But on trying it live, the wifi card is still not detected and inxi shows the kernel to still be 5.15.

I've triple-checked the SHA256 (on download PC, on USB drive and from Ventoy utilities) and it's correct.

What's going on? Did I misunderstand or is it because I'm using Zorin OS 16.3 Lite 64-bit? Does Lite not have the updated kernel?

No where on that page does it say that Zorin OS 16.3 comes with the 6.2 kernel.

It states:

Zorin OS 16.3 is powered by the same version of the Linux kernel as in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (GA).

Ubuntu 22.04 ships with the 5.15 kernel.

If you want the 6.2 kernel:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tuxinvader/lts-mainline

sudo apt update && sudo apt install linux-generic-6.02

Yes, you misunderstood what you might have read. The kernel is the same as that on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. The base is still the same. All is good. :v:

Doh, my bad! Or my wishful thinking.

Although they make a big deal of an updated kernel... but it's still 5.15 like before. Ah, I see now:

  • 16.2: kernel 5.15.0-76
  • 16.3: kernel 5.15.0-78

I'll try that 6.2 kernel update technique at some point in the future but not right now because apt is being problematic over USB tethering again.

You can always roll it back if it doesn't work out.

To be brutally honest: The only time I ever had an issue with a third party Kernel was the Liqourix. Installing it was no problem. Removing it - destroyed everything.

Whoa! Yea thx i installed it and so far no probs, I'm just too curious not to try.

I need to try a 6.x.x kernel. Any suggestions? With mainline there are many.

Has anyone tried 6.4?

I am using xanmod kernel 6.4.7.

Very happy with it.

Nothing out of the ordinary. I saw the same errors when I installed kernel 6.2.16

Well, got a shim error so I'll have to try again without secure boot lol

Are the i915 errors anything to look into? I had very little when messing with another device and Ubuntu MATE - got two or three of the .bin's and just copied to the folder, no more errors. But, just on a whim..

Shim error is important, yes.

These are warnings, not errors. They stand as placeholders for possible future additions to the kernel. You can read more here:

Gotcha - giving it another shot..

Meh, finally booted in after installing - didn't care for how my ZenBook ran.. 5.15.0-78 for now haha

It is true that jumping to the Highest Kernels often does not result in beauty.
The slightly older stable kernels have had time to work out the bugs.

I usually do not recommend it unless a certain piece of hardware requires it. And even then, it often can be a trade off.

@Aravisian Is it possible to update to the daily kernal which is 6.5 i believe? without ukuu which is payware now

OH i read your last post so um ok yea but i still want to try it lol so how?

Fortunately you can always roll back to the previous kernel if the newer is not working out.

Ukuu turned to a paywall? I did not know that...

This method will get you the 6.4.11

I do not know about a way of getting 6.5...
